Rey Was Almost Named Winkie In Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Yesterday saw the release of Lucasfilm Creative Executive Pablo Hidalgo’s book Star Wars: Fascinating Facts. This light-hearted stocking stuffer gives us a bunch of insight into what’s been going on behind the scenes on Star Wars. Most interesting is information on the period in the early 2010s when George Lucas was working on his version of the sequel trilogy.

This resulted in a treatment and concept art, though after Disney purchased Lucasfilm most assumed they had ignored it and done their own thing. That turns out not to be the case, as gossip over the years shown that J.J. Abrams and Kathleen Kennedy used many of Lucas’ ideas in The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi. For example, we just got confirmation that Lucas intended Luke Skywalker to be a regretful and sad hermit living in a cave that would die in the finale of Episode VIII.

Now we know more about the origins of Rey. Here’s how the Hidalgo tells it:

“The Force Awakens’ long journey from idea to finished film was filled with evolution, but one idea that remained constant from the start was that of a young woman’s quest to become a Jedi Knight. In George Lucas’ original outline, she was a 14-year-old girl named Taryn. In his subsequent iterations, she would briefly be named Thea and—believe it or not—Winkie. When writer/director J.J. Abrams came aboard, he simplified the names to placeholders… Thea became Sally… as the film neared production, Sally became Kira (which stuck as the production code name), then Echo, and finally Rey.”

Rey briefly being called Winkie puts a smile on my face and it’s fun to imagine frustrated marketing executives trying to get audiences excited about Winkie Skywalker. While saner hands prevailed and Winkie was ultimately named Rey, this is just another in a long line of very odd names Lucas came up with. My favorite example is him saying to confused game developers that the hero of the Star Wars: The Force Unleashed games either be called Darth Icky or Darth Insanius. Oh well, at least Elan Sleazebaggano made it to our screens intact.

This also goes to show that Disney didn’t completely trash Lucas’ sequel trilogy plans. There are still those who hold out the futile hope that one day Lucas will return to Star Wars and make ‘his’ sequel trilogy, no doubt hoping for him to ‘defeminize’ it and stop the ‘”soyification” of Star Wars. Well, if you’re dumb enough to want that then don’t look to George “Winkie Skywalker” Lucas as your savior.

Mallrats 2 Confirmed To Unite Entire Original Cast And Shoot In 2021

1996’s Mallrats was critically skewered and bombed at the box office. Snooty critics may have been put off by the comic-book references, stoner humor and stink palms, but to a generation of teenagers it became a cult classic. Director Kevin Smith went on to have the last laugh and now plans are coming together for Mallrats 2 (which may also end up being called either Twilight of the Mallrats or Mallrats Too).

Over the past few months we’ve heard confirmation that various members of the original cast were returning, but it’s now looking like a full reunion (with the obvious exception of the dearly departed Stan Lee). This means we’re going to see Shannon Doherty, Jeremy London, Ben Affleck, Joey Lauren Adams, Claire Forlani, Jason Mewes, Michael Rooker, and Smith himself – as well as a potential appearance by Evil Dead star Bruce Campbell.

Smith has now given an interview with Entertainment Weekly, saying:

“Looks like we’re heading toward it now in 2021, which is very exciting for us. It takes place 25 years after the original and features the entire cast, [and] a new cast of characters as well. It’s about Brodie and his daughter and the death of the mall. The Brodie that we met in Mallrats has only been proven right in life. The world came around to his way of thinking. So, based on that, Brodie never really had to grow up and now, at this juncture in time, we face the moment when he might actually have to become an adult.”

Mallrats

Smith also went into the movie’s legacy and how it flopping affected his opinion of it:

“It died at the box office and it’s gone within a week. I was the whipping boy, the sophomore slump of the year. All of that stuff. So, for years, I referred to Mallrats jokingly and jokingly apologized for it.”

While the quality of Smith’s movies is variable (to say the least) I’ve long had a soft spot for the guy. He’s consistently positive, enthusiastic and seems to be extremely loyal to his friends. In addition to Mallrats 2, 2021 will also see his Masters of the Universe: Revelation. This Netflix animated series is created and produced by Smith and will be a direct sequel to the classic 1980s cartoon. He’s got a hell of a voice cast lined up, including Mark Hamill as Skeletor, Sarah Michelle Gellar as Teela and Kevin Conroy as Mer-Man (among many others).

More on both these projects as we hear them.

DJI announces Ronin S 2 and Ronin SC 2 gimbals

Courtesy of DJI

It’s been well over a month since DJI teased its new products, but today it officially announced two new gimbals — the Ronin S 2 and the smaller Ronin SC 2.

Both three-axis gimbals come with upgrades you’d expect — stronger motors, heavier payloads, lighter materials, but also some software features we haven’t seen yet. Before we get to that, let’s start with the hardware changes on the RS 2.

The more professional gimbal out of the two is now made with carbon fiber and is 1.3lbs lighter than the original Ronin S, weighing in at a total of 2.86lbs. DJI says the RS 2 supports maximum dynamic payload up to 10lbs. It can theoretically hold even heaving rigs, but you probably won’t get ideal performance with that.

The gimbal also comes...

Monster Hunter Director Says It’ll Be Very Faithful To The Games

The history of video games being adapted into live-action films has set the bar for accuracy incredibly low, even when taking recent successes like Detective Pikachu or Sonic the Hedgehog into account. That probably explains why the revelation that the upcoming Monster Hunter movie will bring the story out of its fantasy setting and into one reminiscent of Mad Max seems to have been met with less of a collective groan and more of an eye roll by fans of the long running game series.

But these players have nothing to fear, according to director Paul W.S. Anderson, who not only promised to stay faithful to the source material, but claims to have worked very closely with the original creators in a recent interview with Polygon.

“We worked very closely with Capcom on this one, much closer than on any other movie I’ve made. They were very, very involved with it. Everything was run by them and so they got input into absolutely everything. And then in the process of making the movie also, I would fly to Japan with rough cuts of the fight sequences with the creatures, and the actual game animators would comment on the movement of the creatures. ‘The movement of the creature isn’t exactly right here.’ ‘The creature would be a little lower.’ ‘The stance would be slightly different.’ ‘The toenails of the creature are too pointy.’ That was a great note. I’m like, ‘Oh my god, you’re looking at the toenails of the creature?’ We took all the notes because we wanted it to be for fans of the game, for us to put these creatures on screen as accurately as possible.”

As impressive as Anderson’s openness for collaboration may be, his previous track record with video game movies still raises many an eyebrow among fans. His first breakout hit came in the form of 1995’s Mortal Kombat, based on the series of fighting titles created by Ed Boon and John Tobias. Folks generally consider this film to be a mostly accurate adaptation aside from being jarringly sanitized compared to the arcade experience. He then went on to direct several movies based on Resident Evil – another Capcom property – which fans generally tend to see less favorably.

With that said, both Resident Evil and Monster Hunter star Anderson’s wife Milla Jovovich, which might mean that Capcom has been impressed by their previous work with her. But whether or not she or the film can impress audiences will have to wait to be seen when Monster Hunter releases on December 30th.

Watch: Joel And Ellie Team Up In The Last Of Us Movie Fan-Made Trailer

We’ve been lucky enough to get a heap of super cool fan trailers lately. From the jaw-droppingly awesome Lord Vader: A Star Wars Story, to a blood-drenched showdown between two of cinema’s most iconic villains in Jason Vs. Michael, it’s always fun showcasing unique fan-made interpretations of established franchises.

The latest fan trailer to catch our eye is a Last Of Us movie concept teaser, and it’s a real doozie. You can check it out in full above and of course, much thanks must go to the talented YouTuber Smasher for assembling such an authentic take on Sony’s post-apocalyptic horror exclusive. Frankly, this newly discovered video makes us wish for more official news about the recently announced television adaptation.

As you may already know, right now, The Last Of Us is currently in pre-production for the small screen and is scheduled to debut on HBO at some point in the near future. On paper, the ingredients are definitely there to craft something truly special. Not only is the games’ writer-director Neil Druckman attached to help pen the script, but Chernobyl‘s creator Craig Mazin is also involved. Furthermore, Breaking Bad director Johan Renck is apparently on board to helm the show’s pilot, and the survival-horror franchise’s Argentine composer Gustavo Santaolalla is on hand for the TV show’s musical score as well.

It’s likely that the upcoming series will look pretty similar – both tonally and aesthetically – to this recently discovered fan trailer, too. Unfortunately, no casting details or a concrete release date have been officially announced for the project, but rest assured that it’s starting to take shape behind the scenes.

Tell us, though, are you excited for HBO’s upcoming TV adaptation The Last Of Us? And who do you think should play the iconic roles of Joel and Ellie? Let us know in the usual place down below.
