The Best New Movies That Netflix Added This Past Week

Netflix can sometimes be a bit hit and miss when it comes to movies, but some new additions have proved unexpectedly strong this past week and here are the highlights.

The big one last week was Project Power, the streaming service’s take on the all-encompassing zeitgeist of superpowers. A police officer, a teenage drug dealer and a vengeful man form various sides of the investigation into a new drug that affords its users temporary superhuman abilities, along with those behind its creation.

Safety Not Guaranteed also landed last week and is a quirky mix of humor, romance and sci-fi that got Colin Trevorrow noticed and subsequently the job of directing Jurassic World. A trio of journalists are assigned to investigate a newspaper advert (remember them?) asking for companions for a journey back in time, and discover a paranoid but rational man whose mission sparks meditations on regret for past mistakes and the abandoning of dreams as we age.

Freak Show sees a flamboyant teenager begin attending a conservative high school, refusing to compromise himself despite the ridicule and abuse he endures from his peers, then decides to run for Homecoming Queen. The story makes points about how everyone in high school is set apart in some way, and that being true to yourself will put obstacles in your path but also ultimately lead to you being happier.

Fearless is an animated family movie where a teenage gamer becomes the guardian of a trio of superpowered babies as a result of completing his favorite game, and must protect them from the armies of Earth and the machinations of an interstellar warlord who wants to steal their powers.

And finally, The Lost Husband was the last of the big arrivals this past week and sees a widowed woman moving with her kids to a rural farm to start over, and as a mutual attraction grows between her and the hunky farm hand, she begins to emerge from her grief and come alive again. Being isolated from the world is something many people have been struggling with lately, many of us also coping with the loss of loved ones, which has led to this particular movie riding Netflix’s Top 10 list all week long.

Batman Returns’ Danny DeVito Shares His Thoughts On Michael Keaton’s DC Comeback

Earlier this summer, DC fans got some supremely shocking news – that being that Michael Keaton is set to reprise his take on Batman for the first time in 20 years in the upcoming Flash movie. The last time we saw Keaton in the cape and cowl was 1992’s Batman Returns, a highly controversial entry in the Bat-saga at the time but now one that’s highly acclaimed. Alongside its star, Returns featured killer performances from Christopher Walken (Max Shreck), Michelle Pfeiffer (Catwoman) and Danny DeVito (Penguin).

DeVito was asked for his thoughts on Keaton’s Batman return while chatting to ComicBook.com about his new movie, The One and Only Ivan, which hits Disney Plus this Friday. Among other things, the actor said that he’s very excited to see his old friend and co-star back in the DC universe in the Scarlet Speedster’s solo movie.

“I think it’s great,” DeVito said. “I think it’s a great series and I think it’s a wonderful story and it’s a lot of fun and a lot of energy and I loved Oswald Cobblepot, and I love Tim Burton. We’ve done four or five movies together. I can’t wait for him to come up with the next one, whatever we’re gonna do together.”

As DeVito reminds us here, Batman Returns started a long collaboration between himself and director Tim Burton. In fact, DeVito starred in Burton’s last movie, 2019’s Dumbo, which just happened to feature Keaton as the film’s villain, reuniting the Dark Knight and the Penguin for the first time since ’92. ComicBook.com didn’t ask the star whether he’d be up for working with Keaton again as Cobblepot, but presumably this can’t happen due to Oswald’s demise in his first appearance.

Danny DeVito is somehow the last actor to play Penguin on the big screen, though he’ll soon be succeeded by Colin Farrell in The Batman – something which he’s approved of before, too. Keaton’s Batman, meanwhile, is set to make his first DCEU appearance of many in The Flash, coming in summer 2022.

Google is trying to secretly test a 6GHz network in 17 different states, according to a batch of FCC filings spotted by Business Insider. But exactly what Google is trying to test is unclear.

Here’s a few things we do know. Google wants to experiment with 6GHz spectrum to “produce technical information relevant to the utility of these frequencies for providing reliable broadband connections.” The company also says it expects the experiments to take place over 24 months, and has asked permission to do the tests in 26 cities and towns across 17 states — including Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, Nevada, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Utah, and Virginia.

Microsoft’s ‘can’t uninstall Microsoft Edge’ support page is hilariously telling

Photo by Tom Warren / The Verge

Look, I’m sure that the new Microsoft Edge is a fantastic web browser. I’m looking forward to trying it someday.

But Microsoft, I have a piece of advice for you: if so very many Windows users are googling “Can’t uninstall Microsoft Edge” that you feel the need to utterly own that search result by making it the title of your FAQ... maybe just don’t force it on Windows users to begin with?

Here’s a screenshot of the new support page, for posterity:

To be clear, I’m not saying Microsoft shouldn’t have updated users to the new version of Edge, particularly after today’s announcement that Internet Explorer and legacy Edge will be fully phased out exactly one year from now. Continued security updates are important!

But instead...

Google has published an open letter about a newly proposed government regulation that would compel it to pay media outlets for news content. Australians visiting their local Google homepage are presented with an ominous pop-up which warns that “the way Aussies use Google is at risk” and “their search experience will be hurt by new regulation.” It’s a bold lobbying move that puts Google’s arguments against the change in front of millions of Australians.
