Harry Potter Actress Responds To J.K. Rowling’s Transphobic Tweets

Harry Potter fans have been offended by J.K. Rowling’s transphobic Twitter activity before, but this weekend the acclaimed author decided to deliver a massive hit to her own reputation by sharing a series of tweets that made her views crystal clear. Many are furious at Rowling for airing such inflammatory comments at any time, let alone in the midst of the Black Lives Matter movement and Pride Month.

Of course, it wasn’t long before the social media conversation also evolved into discussing the poor representation in the HP novels. Case in point: the controversial character of Cho Chang, who many feel was given an insensitive name and sidelined in the story arc. The chatter got so loud it even caught the attention of Cho herself, Katie Leung, who played the Hogwarts student in the Potter movies. And Leung had the perfect response to the situation.

“So, you want my thoughts on Cho Chang? Okay, here goes… (thread),” Leung wrote. Instead of commenting further, however, the actress shared a series of links to donate or otherwise help support the black trans community.

This is one of those cases when actions speak louder than words. Clearly, Leung has no time for Rowling’s anti-trans beliefs in general and especially for her voicing them during this particular period. The actress smartly used people’s interest in the Rowling controversy to redirect their attention to much more helpful and important matters. It’s a very classy move from the actress and seems to have had the desired effect, earning over 25k retweets at the time of writing.

In case you missed the Twitter storm, here are a few of the tweets from those criticizing Rowling’s depiction of Cho:

There’s no argument about it, Cho Chang is a deeply problematic character in the Harry Potter canon. Thankfully, Katie Leung seems to be fully aware of this and is definitely not here for Rowling’s nonsense. 50 points to Ravenclaw!

Venom: Let There Be Carnage Voted One Of The Most Anticipated Sequels For 2021

Venom: Let There Be Carnage has been voted one of the most anticipated 2021 sequels. The Tom Hardy movie was originally slated to come out in October of this year, but due to COVID-19, production was shut down forcing Sony Pictures to move the release date to June of 2021.

The Twitter account for Fandom asked users to pick their top three most anticipated sequels for 2021 and Venom became a trending topic as a result.

Anticipation for the Venom sequel shouldn’t be all that surprising considering the first movie earned more than $800 million worldwide. But when you compare it to the other sequels coming out next year, the love for Venom is a bit staggering.

Here are the current release dates for upcoming sequels in 2021: Vin Diesel and John Cena’s Fast 9 (April 2), Keanu Reeves’ Matrix 4 (May 21), Jurassic World: Dominion (June 11), Venom 2 (June 25), and the LeBron James and Looney Tunes-starring Space Jam: A New Legacy (July 16). The back half of the year list includes: Spider-Man 3 (November 5), Warner Bros.’ Fantastic Beasts 3 (November 12), the Tom Cruise led Mission: Impossible 7 (November 19), the James Cameron-directed Avatar 2 (December 17) and Robert Downey Jr’s Sherlock Holmes 3 (December 22).

At first glance, it might seem shocking that Venom: Let There Be Carnage is more popular than a lot of these movies. But when it comes to anticipation for follow-ups, it’s all about how well the previous entry did.

The premise and cast for Jurassic World: Dominion should build hype. Sam Neill and Laura Dern are reprising their roles alongside Jeff Goldblum and based on Chris Pratt’s comments about the story, it’s shaping up to be an epic conclusion to this new trilogy. But Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom was not a memorable entry in the franchise which should turn off some casual moviegoers.

The Fantastic Beasts series is the definition of redundancy. The second movie received terrible reviews and box office fell by $150 million worldwide. That’s a downward trend that will continue in the wrong direction. Warner Bros. has committed a lot of money to keeping the Harry Potter universe alive. But with not one, not two, but three more sequels coming, I wouldn’t be surprised if this series eventually finds its way to HBO Max considering the future landscape of movie distribution.

You can lump Matrix 4, Space Jam 2, Avatar 2 and Sherlock Holmes 3 into one group. Sequels to dominant franchises that may or may not reel in audiences again. It will have been at least a decade between sequels for all of these series. The studios are certainly banking on nostalgia.

That leaves Fast 9, Spider-Man 3 and Mission: Impossible 7 as the only movies with significant amounts of currency (Both literally and figuratively) heading into their next installment.

Based on these factors, it makes sense that Venom 2 is one of the most anticipated sequels of 2021. Sure, the first movie was goofy but there’s a lot of love and passion for the anti-hero. Plus, you never know what Hardy is going to do when he’s in a big movie. Wear a mask, change his voice or jump in a tank of lobsters and start eating them.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage arrives in theaters on June 25th, 2021.

Facebook deactivates almost 200 accounts linked to hate groups

Facebook has removed almost 200 accounts connected to white supremacist groups that were trying to rally supporters to attend protests over police violence against black people, the Associated Press reported. The accounts in question were linked to two hate groups Facebook had already banned, the Proud Boys and the American Guard.

Demonstrations continued over the weekend across the US, spurred by the May 25th death of George Floyd in Minneapolis. Authorities have charged fired Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin with second-degree murder in Floyd’s death, after a video showed Chauvin kneeling on Floyd’s neck as other officers looked on. The other officers, who were also fired, have been charged with aiding and abetting murder.
