Ryan Reynolds Donated A Ton Of Money To NAACP Legal Defense Fund

In a recent Instagram post, Deadpool actor Ryan Reynolds announced that he and his wife, the actress Blake Lively, had donated $200,000 to the NAACP’s Legal Defense Fund. The donation was made in support of the nationwide protests following the death of George Floyd, an African American man who was choked after being arrested for passing and possessing an insignificantly small amount of counterfeit currency.

“We contributed $200,000 to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund,” the couple stated in their lengthy but thoughtful post. “We stand in awe of this organization and its leader, Sherrilyn Ifill. And this is just a start.” In the paragraphs that follow their announcement, Reynolds and Lively share their thoughts on the history of racial violence in America, and express their sympathies for the cause which the protesters are fighting for.

The money they have donated, an incredibly charitable amount compared to what some other prominent Americans have offered, will be used – among other things – to pay the legal bills of protesters who have been apprehended by authorities in the past few days, as well as offer financial support to various ongoing and future civil rights lawsuits.

After announcing their donation, the actors also pledged to stay informed about the country’s social and political issues, and vote in upcoming local elections, which have been judged as more important than state and even federal ones when it comes to preventing hate crimes and other such injustices.

Of course, Ryan Reynolds and Lively are far from the only celebrities who have shown their support for the movement. Earlier this week, actor John Cusack made the news when he was harassed by cops for filming a burning car in downtown Chicago. Around the same time, The Flash star Kendrick Sampson was shot by rubber bullets while attending a protest in Los Angeles.

iCloud outage took down some macOS and iOS software and web apps

Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge

Apple’s iCloud service experienced an outage on Tuesday evening, causing errors with account sign-in, iCloud Mail, and web apps via iCloud.com. The issues began shortly after 7PM ET, when user-reported issues began pouring in on Downdetector.com and across Twitter.

Apple acknowledged the issue on its system status website, as well on its Apple Support Twitter account. Many users started seeing similar error messages, including one that says, “The application you have selected does not exist.” MacRumors reported that some other Apple services, like Apple Pay and the company’s web-based app-specific password generator, were also experiencing issues, although Apple never acknowledged as much on its system status page.

New Star Wars Theory Explains Why Palpatine Saved Vader On Mustafar

Before establishing the first Galactic Empire in Revenge of the Sith, Palpatine went through apprentices in basically every installment, seeing them merely as a tool to help him accomplish his goals, but Darth Vader proved to be an exception to this rule.

We know that Anakin was integral to Darth Sidious’ plan to seize control of the galaxy and destroy the Jedi Order. While both Darth Maul and Darth Tyrannus (Count Dooku) were powerful dark-side practitioners in the world of Star Wars, they couldn’t even hope to match the Chosen One’s strength, both as a lightsaber duelist and a Force user. Learning the secret to master death and extract the essence of the living Force, Palpatine was planning to transfer his consciousness to Anakin’s body, who possessed an unusual amount of Midi-chlorians, even higher than that of Grand Master Yoda’s. And while Obi-Wan essentially paralyzed his former padawan and left him to burn on the slopes of Mustafar, Palpatine could still use Anakin as a prodigy of the Force. But is that what motivated Sidious to rush to his new apprentice’s rescue?

Well, it appears that Darth Maul also had a role to play in this matter. As his voice actor Sam Witwer explained some years ago:

“What’s really fun to note is that Darth Maul, having survived his grievous injuries, plants the seed in Palpatine’s head that maybe you don’t give up on these guys so quickly. If they’re dead, or you think they’ve been killed, maybe they’re not. Maybe they can survive, maybe they can amount to something. That’s something we get to see coming up, Sidious realizing that. That ultimately leads to Darth Vader.”

Apparently, at some point in his endeavors, Sidious realized that his apprentices could continue to serve his cause. This is probably why he decided to keep Darth Vader around. In fact, if you think about it, the Emperor had many assets, including the likes of Tarkin and Admiral Thrawn, who kept the order in the galaxy. So, keeping Vader around merely served as a contingency.

Tell us, though, what do you think about this Star Wars theory? And if not for this, why do you think Palpatine decided to save Vader?

Marvel Rumored To Be Turning Deadpool Into A PG-13 Character

Ever since Marvel landed the rights to the X-Men, there’s been both joy and fear from Deadpool fans. On the one hand, it’s exciting to think of him rubbing shoulders with the Avengers or Spider-Man. On the other, there’s the risk that the Merc with a Mouth will have to be sanitized to make him fit into the family-friendly MCU. There’s been various comments on this from those involved with the character, but the hope is obviously that Marvel will stick with the R-rating that Fox established with earlier DP films for Deadpool 3 and onward.

Insider Grace Randolph has shared some new intel today, however, which says that an R-rating is far from set in stone. The Beyond the Trailer host’s latest video details where Marvel is at right now in bringing Deadpool into their franchise. She argues that things are not going smoothly behind the scenes, using DP creator Rob Liefeld’s criticism of Marvel’s handling of the anti-hero on social media as evidence. Not to mention Ryan Reynolds’ apparent lack of knowledge about what the studio is doing, as per his last few comments on the topic.

According to Randolph, then, the earliest Deadpool 3 could get here is in 2023, given how packed Marvel’s Phase 4 lineup already is. However, based on her information, the insider believes that Wade Wilson may show up before then in other MCU projects. Here’s the thing, though: these appearances could apparently rework him into a PG-13 character. And when it gets here, DP3 would then also sport that rating.

There’s a lot of ifs here, then, and everything seems up in the air. Kevin Feige has said in the past that he wouldn’t want to change anything about Deadpool when bringing him into the MCU, but the decision could go even above his head and rest with Disney, who may’ve changed their minds. For now, we’ll just have to see how it all plays out, but it’s not hard to guess which way the vast majority of fans hope it’ll go.

Henry Cavill Rumored To Return For J.J. Abrams’ Superman Movie

HBO Max is quickly becoming the de facto home of all things DCEU. There’s the Snyder Cut of Justice League, the more than likely release of the Ayer Cut of Suicide Squad, and even the J.J. Abrams-helmed Justice League Dark live-action series. But that’s not the only project Abrams is attached to. His contract with Warner Brothers might include an as yet unannounced Superman movie, which could be either a sequel or a reboot at this point.

With all the buzz surrounding the re-release of Justice League, it seems that the original rulebook was thrown out and future plans are being rewritten. Originally the entire cinematic roster seemed to be getting a hard reboot, with the Abrams movie, Matt Reeves’ The Batman, and James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad. But now there seems to be this course-correction of sorts, with talk of Henry Cavill reprising his role as Superman in the DC universe and by extension, the possibility of him playing the lead in Abrams’ Man of Steel sequel.

According to Bounding Into Comics:

Sources told YouTuber John Campea [that] Abrams is indeed making a Superman movie and it will include Cavill – or, at least, that is within the realm of possibility

Of course, these tentative steps forward might rely on the performance of 2021’s Justice League, which would then pave the way for a Justice League 2 and Man of Steel 2. We’ve already seen the character of Superman cross over into Shazam!, so at some point the decision was definitely made to create a shared universe. And with DC locking in big established actors like Dwayne Johnson, Jared Leto and Zachary Levi, the idea of not giving them the chance to interact sounds like a major missed opportunity.

While speaking in a recent interview, Damon Lindelof, who worked with Abrams on Lost, certainly made it sound like the filmmaker always had plans to one day direct a movie featuring the Last Son of Kyrpton, saying:

“But it’s interesting that you mentioned J.J. because long before I worked with him on Lost, J.J. actually wrote a Superman script that never got made for a variety of reasons mostly of which I think is like that Wolfgang Petersen was trying to make a Superman Versus Batman movie,” the writer adds. “They were also trying to do JLA. This was all before Chris Nolan came in and basically took over Batman, et cetera, but it all kind of just got lost in the wash. He’s had a long-term obsession with Superman. I guess what I would say is I would love to see a J.J. Superman movie, but I don’t have a take on the character that would be better than that.”

Of course, this should be taken with a grain of salt until Warner Brothers or Abrams officially announce the next Superman movie. But Cavill’s return also seems highly likely, especially if his popularity among fans is being considered.
