William Shatner Pays Tribute To Late Star Trek Co-Star Leonard Nimoy On Anniversary Of His Death

Ever since its conception, springing from the imagination of creator Gene Roddenberry, Star Trek has been a story of exploration and inspiration.

The Original Series, first aired back in the 1960s, gave us some of the most iconic characters of the entire franchise and also served to introduce various alien species prominent within the Federation. Among these peoples were the Vulcans. If you couldn’t guess, they live on a planet hailed as Vulcan and it’s from this race that the father of Spock comes, while his mother’s a human. Spock is one of the protagonists of Star Trek: TOS, constantly seeking the answers to sophisticated problems through the execution of logic.

The stern, oft-emotionless Mr. Spock makes for a loyal friend of Captain James T. Kirk, despite his painfully awkward sociality. On the screen, this bond was portrayed by Leonard Nimoy (Spock) and William Shatner (Kirk) and both were Star Trek legends at the forefront of the saga’s beginning. Following the cancellation of the original TV show, it became quite clear Trek was gathering a cult following and in the decades following the program, Nimoy and Shatner worked closely on an animated series, a host of feature films and an assortment of Trek-related projects.

As more Trek features were produced, both Nimoy and Shatner had a hand in the broader scope of telling the story. Nimoy got to direct Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984) and Shatner directed Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989). Their involvement with the franchise fostered a genuine relationship both on and off the camera.

Nimoy sadly passed away on February 27th, 2015 and though half a decade has elapsed, it’s still a sore spot for his friend and co-star Shatner. Earlier this week, in fact, he took to Twitter and posted a brief note in commemoration of his late pal and colleague.

In addition to the sorrow over the death of his friend, the standing between Shatner and Nimoy at the latter’s death was steeped in tempers and controversy. As you no doubt know, Shatner didn’t attend Nimoy’s funeral due to a falling out between the two several years prior. This rose out of an incident in which Shatner recorded Nimoy without his permission for Trek documentary The Captains. The two hadn’t spoken for five years prior to his death, according to Shatner.

Nevertheless, in Live Long And…What I Learned Along the Way, the Captain Kirk actor’s memoir, he pens: “It was made clear to me that I was not welcome at his funeral…That was painful.”

Nimoy shall always be the original Mr. Spock for hardcore Star Trek fans – it’s only logical – and he’s still dearly missed to this day.

Captain Marvel Star Brie Larson Waited Years To Get A Selfie With Gal Gadot

Yesterday was a big moment for comic book fans as they finally got to witness the legendary crossover between Captain Marvel‘s Brie Larson and Wonder Woman‘s Gal Gadot. Or a version of it, at least.

It’s an undeniable fact that the superhero genre has been the single dominant force of cinema for the past decade, but few people would’ve imagined that such movies could achieve success with a female lead. That stereotypical assumption even compelled MCU mastermind Kevin Feige to consider quitting his job. Fortunately, everything changed after Gal Gadot donned the Wonder Woman costume in 2017 and received universal recognition for portraying Princess Diana in Patty Jenkins’ live-action adaptation.

Marvel Studios, meanwhile, was a late adopter of this new wave, but Captain Marvel came out last year and shattered several box office records, including becoming the highest-grossing female-led superhero movie of all time. While it’s true that Black Widow will serve as a huge milestone for this new subgenre in a couple of months, Brie Larson and Gal Gadot are currently the only significant female voices in the world of superheroes.

What makes this even more wholesome is the fact that, for as long as we can remember, the two have supported each other. They even cemented this friendship a few weeks ago by presenting together at the Academy Awards. And after sharing some of the backstage photos with fans yesterday, Larson retweeted something on her personal feed that implies she’d been waiting for a chance to get a selfie with Wonder Woman for years.

Since these talented actresses represent two competing comic houses, it’s fair to assume that they’d be bitter rivals. However, as evidenced recently, the exact opposite is true.

Of course, it should be noted that fans have previously seen such crossovers where Captain Marvel and Wonder Woman have teamed up on the colorful pages of comic, but we wouldn’t expect to see that happening on the big screens any time soon. Still, we can dream, right?

Back To The Future Remake Fan Art Shows Tom Holland And RDJ As Marty And Doc Brown

With the never-ending parade of remakes, reimaginings, and re-releases, it’s become quite clear Hollywood will continue to push out new versions of older movies — as long as they remain profitable, that is. While this trend has been pushed along thanks to Disney’s suite of live-action remakes, it seems like some beloved franchises have managed to avoid going down this route, and that includes one of our favorite sci-fi series.

Say what you want about how fast and loose they play with the concept of time travel, but the Back to the Future films were some of the best of their era, and their appeal certainly hasn’t died down in the decades since. Bob Gale, who co-created the series with director Robert Zemeckis, has served as the “gatekeeper of the franchise” since its inception, and as we recently reported, has turned down all offers he’s received to greenlight a remake.

In fact, we even caught wind Tom Holland himself has had discussions about starring in a potential remake/reboot, but it looks like plans for a fourth movie have died down. However, that hasn’t stopped some talented artists from reimagining the franchise’s beloved characters with entirely new actors at the helm.

As reported by ScreenRant, digital artist ApexForm recently shared a fan poster that recasts Tom Holland as Marty McFly and Robert Downey Jr. as Doc Brown. Personally, RDJ looks a little too happy in the rendering, but overall, it’s a fairly solid attempt.

This particular poster aside, we’re thrilled there’s no remake on the way, but with the franchise celebrating its 35th anniversary in July, we wouldn’t be opposed to a Back to the Future 4K UHD re-release. Petition To Bring Johnny Depp Back To Pirates Of The Caribbean Almost At Its Goal

After Johnny Depp allegedly lost the role as the main star of Pirates of the Caribbean because of his messy legal battle with Amber Heard, fans are now petitioning for Disney to give Jack Sparrow back to him.

The Pirates franchise has always been a hit at the box office and while a number of unique features have contributed to that successful run over the years, there’s no denying that Johnny Depp is the glue that ends up holding it all together every time. Unfortunately, though, the Mouse House announced a couple of months ago that they didn’t intend to bring the star back for another installment, deciding instead to give the series a soft reboot with another actor at the helm.

Now, in light of the new evidence as part of Depp’s defamation lawsuit against Heard that exposed her for physically and emotionally abusing him during their time together, fans are banding up and asking for justice. As we previously reported, the petition to bring back Depp to Pirates of the Caribbean is quickly gaining momentum and as of now, it’s just shy of 29,000 signatures away from its 200,000 goal. It’s also interesting to note that it’s gaining traction concurrently as the petition to remove Amber Heard from Aquaman 2 is on its way to hit the next target of 500,000 signatures.

Of course, it remains to be seen if these appeals end up affecting the decision-making process at Disney and WB headquarters, but it seems that fans are quite adamant to see justice served, even if it’s at the expense of the actress behind the DCEU’s Mera losing her job. After all, as they point out, Depp had to unjustly endure the same thing, right?

Meanwhile, Paul Bettany has recently gotten dragged into the lawsuit against Heard as both sides continue to give evidence for review at court, proof that this messy squabble is still far from over.

The Internet Archive’s VHS Vault will send you on a 90s nostalgia trip

The Internet Archive, perhaps best known for the extremely handy Wayback Machine you can use to find older versions of webpages, also has free movies, books, software, and music. Yet a little known part of the organization’s media trove includes uploaded recordings from VHS tapes, as I learned today thanks to this Vice article. They live on The VHS Vault, and as of this writing, there are more than 20,000 recordings you can peruse.

A lot of the recordings are from the 90s, which is when I was a kid, so I’ve found a lot of stuff that has given me all sorts of nostalgic feels. Take, for example, this collection of Nickelodeon commercial breaks recorded in April 1998:
