Jack Reacher Creator Says Tom Cruise Is Too Old For Action Movies

Clearly, Lee Child hasn’t seen Mission: Impossible – Fallout. The author behind the Jack Reacher novels was never the biggest fan of the relatively diminutive Tom Cruise playing a character that was written as a hulking human being, but now Child has gone a step further by claiming that 57 year-old Cruise is now too old to be starring in action movies.

While there may be a time for every aging action icon to hang up their boots for good, as recent reactions to both Rambo: Last Blood and Terminator: Dark Fate seem to have indicated for Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger, the logic hardly applies to Cruise here. After all, the actor is renowned for performing his own stunts no matter how dangerous they may be, whether it be scaling the world’s tallest building or learning how pilot a helicopter for a high-octane chase scene, all in the name of entertaining audiences.

Cruise may not have been the right fit physically for playing Jack Reacher, but the first movie and sequel Never Go Back delivered two solid-if-unspectacular genre flicks, that allowed the star to play a more grounded role than the likes of Mission: Impossible’s Ethan Hunt. However, after the second installment underperformed at the box office, Reacher went back to the drawing board and is set to be rebooted, with Child also admitting that Cruise wasn’t too happy about the news either.

“He had his own investment in it, he was going to argue against it. It sounds extremely patronizing but I think it’s good for him. He’s too old for this stuff. He’s 57, he needs to move on, transition to being a character actor. He could get another 20 years out of it. He has the talent. He’s a terrific guy, very considerate, good fun.”

Clearly, Tom Cruise didn’t get the memo, as he is set to shoot the seventh and eighth installments of the Mission: Impossible series back-to-back, so who knows what kind of insane stunts he’s got planned in order to raise the bar even higher. The Jack Reacher movies marked a diversion from the actor’s usual big-budget fare, but with Mission and Top Gun next on the agenda, it seems that the aging action star is content to rely on the franchise flicks that made him one of the biggest stars in the business.

Chris Hemsworth Says Thor: Love And Thunder Will Be Fresh And New

With Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans now officially done as leading men in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, although there are still rumors that one or both of them will return in cameo form, Chris Hemsworth will have the distinction of being the first Marvel Studios superhero to lead four standalone movies when Thor: Love and Thunder hits theaters in November 2021.

By the time Taika Waititi’s sequel arrives, the God of Thunder will have been on our screens for over ten years, and during that time the character has undergone a tremendous evolution. Hemsworth’s Thor was initially a stoic and somewhat somber prince who was biding his time to fulfill his destiny as King of Asgard, before Ragnarok reinvented him as a heavily-comedic presence, which ultimately led to a traumatized Thor packing on the pounds and drinking his sorrows away when we found him in Avengers: Endgame, before he ultimately gave up the throne and headed off into space with the Guardians of the Galaxy.

That’s quite the journey, and leaves plenty of options on the table for whatever direction Waititi decides to take Love and Thunder. We know that Natalie Portman will be returning to wield Mjolnir, and the director himself has promised that the movie will be even bigger and crazier than the already big and crazy Ragnarok, but when asked if he could reveal any story details, Hemsworth admitted that he hasn’t even seen the script yet.

“Lots of love and lots of thunder. You can expect that. I haven’t seen the script yet. I know they’re working very hard on it and pretty excited to bring you something pretty fresh and new again. But having left Endgame, where Thor was, we have a lot of room to move there and drastically change again, which is very, very exciting. But we start shooting that sort of mid-next year.”

Given the heavy amounts of improvisation that Taika Waititi encouraged among the cast on Ragnarok, Hemsworth likely isn’t missing out on too much having not seen the script yet. Expectations are sky-high for Thor: Love and Thunder following the critical and commercial success that greeted the previous installment though, and with the director admitting that he wouldn’t have returned to the franchise if he couldn’t put another new twist on the formula, there’s no way to predict just how wild the fourth entry is going to get.

Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker Creative Team Took A Lot Of Notes From George Lucas

At some point, someone is going to clarify just how much involvement George Lucas has had with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. While Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy has said that the creator of the franchise is unlikely to ever become actively involved with a galaxy far, far away ever again, conflicting reports have also claimed that Lucas had to step in and essentially rework the entire movie after some early test screenings yielded disastrous results.

To be fair, nobody knows Star Wars as well as the guy who created the entire thing, but let’s not forget that he also sold the rights to Disney for $4bn, and allowed a new team of filmmakers to create new movies and TV shows set in the universe, despite his objections with how they planned to handle the direction of the story.

J.J. Abrams has promised that The Rise of Skywalker would bring a definitive end to the nine-film arc started with A New Hope in 1977, and Kathleen Kennedy admitted in a recent interview that in an attempt to tie up so many story threads, some of which had been going on for over 40 years, the key creatives involved with the ninth installment held a meeting with Lucas to hear his opinions, and ended up taking plenty of notes.

“We sat down with George for a long meeting before we ever put pen to paper on this final episode, so we had the benefit of his thoughts. We took a lot of notes.”

At this point, it seems that George Lucas is the Godfather of Star Wars more than anything, the wise old sage that people turn to for advice or counsel when dealing with new chapters in the saga. However, at some point either Disney or Lucas himself will have to stop relying on each other in order to generate new content, especially given the high turnover of filmmakers on the franchise in recent years, along with recent developments making the future of Star Wars more unclear than ever, with even the studio admitting they don’t know what comes next.

Godzilla Vs. Kong Delayed Eight Months To November 2020

Out of all the cinematic universes that sprang up in the wake of Marvel’s unprecedented success, Legendary’s MonsterVerse seemed to be faring better than much of the competition. The franchise was retroactively created following Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla in 2014, with Kong: Skull Island’s status as a prequel allowing the story to fit some of the narrative building blocks in place in order to eventually build to super-sized smackdown Godzilla vs. Kong.

The first two installments yielded virtually identical critical and commercial results, with both sitting on a 75% Rotten Tomatoes score and a rating of 62 on Metacritic, although Skull Island’s $566.7m box office haul was marginally higher than Godzilla’s $525m. However, the most recent entry, Michael Dougherty’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters, slowed the MonsterVerse’s momentum somewhat after earning tepid reviews and failing to crack $400m globally.

There had been rumors that the relative disappointment that greeted King of the Monsters could have a knock-on effect towards Godzilla vs. Kong, and it looks like there may be some merit to these reports, as it was recently announced that the kaiju blockbuster has been pushed back eight months, and is now set to be released in December 2020 as opposed to the March opening that was originally announced.

Little information is available about the movie at all, bar the incredibly vague official synopsis, along with promises from the studio that the face-off will deliver exactly what the fans want, so perhaps this news doesn’t come as much of a surprise. The entire franchise seems to have been created specifically to deliver Godzilla vs. Kong, with the filmmakers expected to work backwards from there in cracking the story, so it seems likely that there could be extensive reshoots ahead before the movie is ready to be released.

Watch Google Assistant’s new Ambient Mode in action for the first time

Google posted a new video today showing its upcoming Ambient Mode feature for Google Assistant in action on an Android device. The company first announced Ambient Mode at IFA in September. The mode shows onscreen items like calendar info, notifications, weather, and smart home controls on your lock screen when your phone or tablet is plugged into a charger. It effectively turns your phone into a smart display and until now, we didn’t know how it would actually function in real time.

Ambient Mode looks pretty handy — even if it might be seems somewhat duplicative of functionality you’d already find on a Google Nest Hub, as my colleague Dieter Bohn pointed out in his original article. But, in theory, it seems like Ambient Mode could tell...

TfL had been extending Uber’s license to operate in London in recent months, after the ride sharing company lost its license in 2017. TfL originally revoked Uber’s license citing Uber’s approach to serious criminal offences, medical certificates, disclosure and barring checks, and the company’s use of its Greyball software that TfL said blocked regulatory bodies from gaining full access to Uber’s app for law enforcement duties.
