Disney CEO Says The Spider-Man Feud With Sony Is Over

At this point, I’m pretty sure True Believers are just beginning to towel off after dancing in the streets for the past few hours. Basically, a peace treaty of sorts had been brokered between Disney and Sony, thereby bringing the Cold War concerning the cinematic rights to Spider-Man to an end.

If you’ve been keeping up with the situation, then you already know all that’s transpired. Still, it’s nice getting reassurances of how fears of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man not being able to make mention of Tony Stark have been put to bed.

Offering up the comforting words was that of Robert Iger, Chairman and CEO for The Walt Disney Company, saying the following on Twitter:

“Disney-Sony @SpiderMan feud ends. Kevin Feige to produce sequel!!!
This certainly warms my heart! Thank you @Sony!”

If you’re someone who needs to be brought up to speed, the Kevin Feige reference he made was in regard to there being at least one more solo Spider-Man movie to take place within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In addition to that awesomeness, Peter Parker will guest star in an unnamed Marvel picture sometime soon.

Still, it should be pointed out that Spidey’s stay in the MCU won’t exactly be permanent. After those two obligations are fulfilled, then it’s entirely possible the wallcrawler will be the exclusive property of Sony. As such, there’s already chatter saying Feige and friends are concocting a way to write Peter out of the MCU when the time comes. But on the plus side, that likely means Tom Holland will get to crossover with Tom Hardy’s Venom.

Spider-Man 3, or whatever it winds up being called, arrives in theaters on July 16th, 2021.

Antonio Banderas Reflects On Pain And Glory, Considers His Involvement An Honor

Antonio Banderas’ performance as an ailing filmmaker in Pedro Almodóvar’s semi-autobiographical Pain and Glory is as intimate as any you’ll see this year.

Since its premiere and hailing appraisal out of the Venice Film Festival earlier this summer, the international star’s name has been tossed about as an early candidate in the Oscar race – though the lasting effects of his involvement stem far beyond material accolades. Here was a chance for Banderas, 59, to explore and enact the inner workings of one of his oldest comrades and collaborators.

“To find somebody who’s developed a very strong personality…and has been absolutely loyal to that personality is very rare,” the Zorro lead said of Almodóvar. “I am actually a very, very lucky person [to have] shared in that universe with him.”

Banderas’ working and friendly relationship with the Spanish auteur stretches across 40 years and eight films, their first being 1982’s sex-crazed melodrama Labyrinth of Passion. However, their off-and-on partnership has never been more effective than in Pain and Glory, which saw Banderas walk out of Italy with its festival’s Best Actor award in hand.

Pain and glory

One of the many reasons for this performance’s success may be the wealth of valid insight at Banderas’ disposal. His character, Salvador Mallo, is the spawn of Almodóvar’s actual life. Showcasing a filmmaker on the brink of physical and mental collapse, the picture bounces between Salvador’s hazy, heroin-laced semi-retirement and flashbacks of his humble childhood alongside his mother, played by Penelope Cruz.

Another may be the distinct departure from the suave, sexy Spaniard persona Banderas’ career has, in so many instances, relied on. He and his director agreed early in the process that a “clean slate” was required for Salvador, who, with a salt-and-pepper mane and a horrendous surgical scar along his spine, never comes close to wielding a gun or saber.

With that said, pain, as the title suggests, was not entirely absent from the production.

“The amount of emotion that surrounded this particular movie…was unexpected for me,” the actor explained, detailing Almodóvar’s cathartic confrontations with the onscreen version of his mother. In one instance, Banderas was even fueled by the Volver creator’s inability to repeat a potent line from his own screenplay.

“That emotional information was not planned,” he admitted. “Those are things that happen in the moment, and if you are fresh…you can work with them.”

pain and glory

In terms of motivation, Banderas had some experiences of his own, beyond Almodóvar’s, to mine inspiration. Two and a half years ago, he suffered from a heart attack that quickly put into perspective the most important things in his life, a transformation that didn’t go unnoticed by his longtime collaborator.

“It opened my eyes to understand myself better…and Pedro saw that. He said, ‘I don’t know how to describe it, but after you had this heart attack, there is something in you. Don’t hide it. I want you to use that for the character.’”

“Don’t worry,” Banderas responded, “I know exactly what you’re talking about.”

Pain and Glory will be released theatrically by Sony Pictures Classics on October 4th.

Marvel And Disney Will Now Get 25% Of The Box Office For Spider-Man 3

It looks like Disney’s greed paid off big time. Following Marvel’s split with Sony, plenty of angry fans directed their ire at the latter studio. Now the two sides have struck a deal to keep Peter Parker in the MCU for at least the time being. Part of the agreement states that Disney will now get 25% of the box office profits from Spider-Man 3, which is 500% more than the percentage they used to haul in for previous installments in the web-head franchise.

It’s not like the multimedia conglomerate really needs the money. They’re already hauling in billions of dollars per year thanks to all of their other massive projects, including the highest-grossing film of all-time that was released just a few months ago. Now, however, the company is in line to get in even richer. Given the zaftig financial numbers that Spider-Man movies seem to always put up, this dramatic increase in their stake will definitely line the pockets of the executives who made this deal happen.

Those in charge at Sony likely knew that this deal would have to get done eventually. Despite their belief that they can produce Peter Parker films without the help of Marvel, fans clearly thought otherwise. They responded to news of the schism with petitions, boycotts and hashtags. A few people even proposed storming the corporation’s headquarters to show their displeasure. Support from Stan Lee’s daughter and a Spider-Man screenwriter just weren’t enough to change the public’s mind on who’s to blame for the fallout. Public pressure eventually just became too much for Sony and they had to acquiesce to Disney’s demands.

The good news is that everyone’s favorite wise-cracking web-slinger will now rejoin the MCU at least temporarily. Spider-Man 3 is expected to be released in July 2021. What happens after that is still anyone’s guess.

The Mortal Kombat Movie Reboot Logo Has Been Revealed

Having been a fan of Mortal Kombat since the early 1990s, I’ve seen the ups and downs of the franchise firsthand throughout the years. But what made that decade particularly exciting in this instance was being able to enjoy the Kombatants in a variety of media. In addition to playing the video games, I watched the movies and animated series, read the comic books and novels, and collected the action figures. And in the interest of full disclosure, the first CD I ever bought was Mortal Kombat: The Album, the collection of goofy techno songs based on each character from the original game.

If you can relate, then you’ve probably been disappointed at how nothing has developed on the movie front since 1997. The closest we got was a web series nearly a decade ago, but that’s not quite the same as seeing the fighters we love spilling blood on the silver screen yet again.

Fortunately, things have been coming together so quickly for the reboot that it’s been somewhat hard to even accept any of it as reality. Believe it or not, filming is already underway, and actor Lewis Tan has taken it upon himself to share a new photo on Instagram. Seen below is a clapperboard offering our first look at the flick’s logo.

As you can see, it’s familiar to the variations of logos we’ve come to know over the years, with a bit of an Oroboros twist on the dragon. Of course, this could be jettisoned for something else once the marketing machine powers up, so we’ll just have to wait and see.

Getting back to Tan, it’s worth mentioning how it’s yet to be divulged which character he’s playing. With so much other casting news being disclosed, I’m not sure why there’s such mystery surrounding him. Fan speculation has placed him as Kung Lao, but again, that’s unconfirmed.

Mortal Kombat arrives in theaters on March 5th, 2021.

Here’s Your First Look At Batman In Superman: Red Son Animated Movie

Now that Batman: Gotham by Gaslight has opened the door for various other Elseworlds tales to be adapted as animated films, Superman: Red Son will be the first to follow in its footsteps. To be quite honest, this doesn’t come as much of a surprise because the limited series written by Mark Millar and illustrated by Dave Johnson has long remained one of the most popular in the line, not to mention DC fans demanding this become a reality for years.

To briefly sum up what that story entailed for those unfamiliar, what you need to know going into your first viewing of the animated flick is that it explored that possibility of baby Kal-El’s rocket landing in Soviet Russia instead of in Smallville, Kansas. As you can imagine, the Comrade of Steel had a very different upbringing than the hero we’ve come to know otherwise.

What’s also exciting about the material was how it put new spins on other DC icons including Wonder Woman, Lex Luthor, Green Lantern and, of course, Batman. Hot on the heels of our first look at the animated Soviet Superman is the unveiling of the ushanka- wearing Dark Knight, which can be viewed below.

In case you were wondering, this version of Batman will be voiced by none other than Roger Craig Smith. After first being introduced in the video game Batman: Arkham Origins, Smith reprised the role in three Batman Unlimited animated films, in addition to the Batman Ninja anime. This time, however, I’d expect him to do so with a Russian accent.

Rounding out the rest of the cast will be Jason Isaacs as Superman, Diedrich Bader as Lex Luthor, Amy Acker as Lois Lane, Vanessa Marshall as Wonder Woman, Phil Morris as James Olsen, Paul Williams as Brainiac, Sasha Roiz as Green Lantern Hal Jordan, Phil LaMarr as Green Lantern John Stewart, William Salyers as Stalin, Jim Meskimen as JFK, Travis Willingham as Superior Man and Winter Ave Zoli as Svetlana.

Superman: Red Son currently lacks a release date, but an early 2020 Blu-ray release is being targeted.

In The Irishman, Martin Scorsese finally takes the glamour out of gangsters

Photo: Netflix

At the press conference following the New York Film Festival press screening of the Netflix-produced feature The Irishman, director Martin Scorsese discussed the project’s long gestation, noting that he and star Robert De Niro had wanted to work together again “since Casino.” It sounded odd to hear it put that way, because before Casino, De Niro and Scorsese had one of the most prolific collaborations in American movies — to the point where during Casino’s 1995 release, critics largely received it as an old-hat retread of Goodfellas. Now it’s 2019, Casino has a better reputation, and De Niro and Scorsese haven’t made a feature together in decades.

That kind of time-passing blink is at the heart of The Irishman, even if its...
