Lucasfilm Explains Why Star Wars Doesn’t Follow The MCU Template

It’s no secret that the dismal box office return of Solo: A Star Wars Story prompted a great deal of soul-searching over at Lucasfilm Towers.

Despite charting the galactic origins of Han Solo, arguably the greatest smuggler of them all, Ron Howard’s standalone adventure struggled to leave much of a dent on the box office charts, and fell far short of its fellow Star Wars anthology, Rogue One, when the final numbers were counted.

And so, Disney immediately pumped the brakes on its Star Wars spinoff movies to instead focus on the mainline franchise, beginning with The Rise of Skywalker. Other stories will be spun out onto television in the vein of The Mandalorian, but whereas Marvel Studios is able to craft entire trilogies around its characters, Lucasfilm is quite limited by the existing Star Wars lore.

But don’t just take our word for it; here’s Kathleen Kennedy, explaining to Vanity Fair why Star Wars will never follow the same blueprint as the MCU.

I think there is a larger expectation that Disney has. On the other hand, though, I think that Disney is very respectful of what this is, and right from the beginning, we talked about the fragility of this form of storytelling. Because it’s something that means so much to fans that you can’t turn this into some kind of factory approach. You can’t even do what Marvel does, necessarily, where you pick characters and build new franchises around those characters. This needs to evolve differently.

That question will take on a whole new meaning once The Rise of Skywalker has come and gone. We already know that Lucasfilm has appointed David Benioff and D.B. Weiss for one Star Wars movie series, while The Last Jedi‘s Rian Johnson has been handed the keys to another.

From what we understand, each trilogy will be totally unique and exist independently from the core Skywalker Saga. Which is just as well, given it’s all set to conclude this Christmas with the aptly titled Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

John Wick’s Already Killed More People Than Jason And Michael Myers Combined

Who would’ve thought that after just three movies, John Wick would be the most lethal killer in the business? Better yet, who would’ve thought Chad Stahelski and David Leitch’s 2014 revenge thriller would spawn an entire franchise? And yet, here we are, celebrating the arrival of Chapter 3 – Parabellum and all of its kick-ass action scenes.

Because make no mistake, the third (and definitely not final) chapter in Wick’s cinematic saga is a slick, expertly crafted action movie. It’s earned rare reviews ever since it blasted its way into theaters, and now that the Internet is fawning over Keanu Reeves and his on-screen hitman, the good folks at Bloody Disgusting and Rotten Tomatoes have crunched the numbers to reveal that John Wick has already killed more people than Michael Myers (140) and Jason Voorhees (157) combined. And he did so in just three movies.

Between them, Myers and Voorhees have amassed 297 kills across 20 films, and were no doubt helped by last year’s Halloween sequel. But it seems John Wick is just getting started, given the modern-day Boogeyman has already racked up 306 people in just three movies.

John Wick – 84
John Wick: Chapter 2 – 128
John Wick: Chapter 3 – 94

That’s… frightening. We all knew Keanu Reeves’ was a certified badass from the moment he swore revenge against Iosef Tarasov and his Russian goons. But by the time Parabellum rolled around, the stakes rose quite considerably; John had killed a member of the High Table, resulting in a $14 million bounty being placed on his head.

It’s part of the reason why Chapter 3 begins just as Chapter 2 ended… with John Wick sprinting out of New York with only his wit and his will to protect him. And frankly, with a body count exceeding 300 people, that’s all he really needs.

Todd McFarlane’s Spawn Reboot Having Trouble Getting Off The Ground

For the longest time, it looked certain that Todd McFarlane’s Spawn reboot would never see the warm light of day – that is, until the casting of Jamie Foxx as Albert “Al” Simmons.

Foxx’s addition was undoubtedly a major coup for the long-gestating project – ditto for Avengers: Endgame‘s Jeremy Renner, who signed on shortly thereafter in a supporting role – but as McFarlane himself tells ComicBook.com, there are many challenges still facing his Spawn movie before it reaches the big screen.

As a matter of fact, the R-rated pic is still languishing in the early stages of development, and much of that comes down to McFarlane’s reluctance to compromise. Put simply, the writer-director hasn’t entertained the possibility of changing his vision too much, otherwise he’ll walk away from Spawn entirely.

Yep. About the same spot. The money’s sitting on the sidelines ready to go. I just need to get everyone that wants to put in money to shake their heads to the same script. As you can imagine, everyone has a slightly different version of it in their head. You just go and trying to appease a handful of people while not giving in to what it is that I’m trying to do myself. Because if I have to change it too much, I’ll just walk away from it all.

This is by no means the first time that McFarlane has provided a status report on Spawn – nor is it likely to be the last – but as part of his candid chat with ComicBook.com, the comic book scribe went on to describe a dream scenario in which his long-awaited passion project finally gets the green light from either Sony, Universal, Paramount or any other studio that displays an interest.

Here’s how it would work, is that let’s say even we had let’s say, three studios, right? Let’s just pick three. So we got Sony. I’m gonna make it all up. Sony, Universal, Paramount, the ones that don’t have Marvel and DC. They should hopefully be more interested. Even if they all showed interest at the same time, our questions are gonna be, ‘Well, what kind of marketing campaign are you gonna do with it?’ And then number two, ‘What are your slots that you have?’ Right? And so, some of them may say, ‘Hey, I’ve got this campaign, and we’ve got this slot.’ We think it would be better, but you have to wait another three, four, five months till we got the opening that we think is right. And somebody else might say, ‘Hey, we can go sooner than that, but maybe we’re not gonna pour as much into advertising.’ And we’ll just have to weigh those variables, and then go, ‘Which one do we think makes the most sense for the project’s success as a whole?’

Of course, we know that Blumhouse has already committed to distribution duties, so at the very least, Spawn has that base covered. All that’s left now is for McFarlane and his creative team to settle on a script, before that all-important release date is locked in. The man himself recently proposed a Halloween launch for Al Simmons, but much like all the other finer details, we’ll have to wait and see whether that comes to pass.

Hellboy Reboot Fizzles Out At The Box Office With Disastrous Run

Do you remember last month’s Hellboy reboot? You know, the ill-timed one which came out just before Avengers: Endgame? The one starring David Harbour, of Stranger Things fame? Frankly, we don’t either, and it probably has something to do with the fact that it completely bombed.

As reported by MovieWeb, it officially ended its stint at the domestic box office, and the results weren’t too pretty. Needless to say, we wouldn’t be surprised if there won’t be a sequel or follow-up anytime in the near future. As Box Office Mojo details, Neil Marshall’s reboot only raked in a mere $12 million during its opening weekend, and after more than a month in theaters, it topped out at just under $22 million.

When combined with the $18 or so million it took in overseas, that means Hellboy came it at $40M total. This wouldn’t be bad for a smaller, independent film, but with a $50M budget (not accounting for advertising), it’s safe to say Lionsgate is kicking themselves.

So, the question remains: why exactly did it fail? Aside from its many shortcomings, some would argue that no one was clamoring for a new Hellboy movie. Similarly, unlike the first two films, this one didn’t have Guillermo del Toro attached, which arguably hurt its chances of succeeding on name recognition alone.

Director Neil Marshall isn’t the most popular filmmaker out there, and while David Harbour has seen some success on Netflix’s Stranger Things, it looks like that wasn’t enough to convince moviegoers to spend their hard-earned cash. And we haven’t even touched upon the film’s casting controversies, which originally saw Ed Skrein taking on the role of Ben Daimio, a Japanese-American character.

We can’t exactly say we’re surprised by Hellboy‘s disastrous box office run. And though a few of us here at We Got This Covered weren’t particularly thrilled with Marshall’s take on the much-beloved comic series, we’re still holding out hope that the franchise isn’t dead in the water.

New Promo Confirms Terminator: Dark Fate’s A Direct Sequel To Judgment Day

Ask any movie fan to name the most convoluted film franchise and they’ll likely point you in the direction of Terminator.

It uses time travel, for one, and has so far produced five features of varying quality. Dark Fate hopes to change all that come November though – albeit with some time travel thrown in for good measure.

Heralding the return of writer-producer James Cameron and Sarah Connor herself, Linda Hamilton, there’s a crackle of excitement swirling around Terminator: Dark Fate, particularly now that the sci-fi sequel has debuted its action-packed first trailer. And while it’s technically the sixth installment in this most beloved franchise, Cameron considers it to be T2‘s “direct sequel.” But don’t just take our word for it; here’s the movie maestro talking all things Dark Fate in a new featurette:

Dark Fate is the direct sequel to Terminator 2: Judgment. We pick up the characters that we knew from Terminator 2, and we carry them forward. This film captures the spirit of those first two movies – it’s gritty, it’s intense, and it’s just a white-knuckle ride.

Welcome to a post-Judgment Day world, where the remnants of humanity are still being hunted by Skynet and their bipedal weapons of war. This being a Terminator movie, we have a sneaking suspicion that Gabriel Luna’s robot has been sent back from the future, presumably to kill Natalia Reyes’ mystery character.

She’s seemingly the catalyst of Dark Fate and its apocalyptic story, though director Tim Miller is quick to welcome Cameron and Hamilton back to the franchise they helped create all those years ago.

We get Jim [Cameron] back writing in the producer’s chair. He knows the material like nobody else. I think for fans of the franchise, the biggest thing is that Linda’s returning.

Terminator: Dark Fate boots online November 1st, 2019. And unlike Genisys, there’s no talk of a potential franchise this time around; Miller and his team seem to be pouring all their creative energies into this one entity. And thank the heavens for that.
