Matt Smith Says He’s Definitely Not In Star Wars: Episode IX

With Lucasfilm remaining stingy with the details on Star Wars: Episode IX, the project has practically been a blank canvas on which the internet can offer its rumors and theories, and that goes especially for the cast’s various newcomers. Matt Smith, for instance, has been the subject of a whole load hearsay which has generally placed the Doctor Who actor in a villainous role. A fresh development that may put a slight damper on this prediction, however, is that Smith denies even being in the movie.

The original source for the claim that Smith has a role in the feature was a Variety report published back in August. In other words, the assertion has a lot more going for it than your average Reddit rumor, which makes it a little surprising that journalist Emily Zemler has now tweeted the following after sitting down with Smith:

“One takeaway: Matt Smith is not in the next #StarWars movie, despite reports to the contrary. He told me, ‘As far as I can tell, I’m definitely not.’ (Although maybe we’ll be surprised by his secret keeping in December.)”

After seeing the uproar caused by this tweet, Zemler followed up her message with a reminder that the studio never announced Smith’s involvement, meaning that the claim may have just been a rumor. At the same time, she adds that it’s also possible that Smith simply wasn’t allowed to tell her.

If you’re looking for hope that Smith is just good at keeping secrets, Episode IX actor Richard E. Grant seemed to heavily hint at his involvement in an interview with Radio Times just a few weeks ago. After being asked if he and Smith would share any scenes in J.J. Abrams’ film, Grant replied:

“I would be fired if I told you anything about that.”

From the sound of things, there’s still every chance that the original Variety report had it right. That being said, we perhaps also shouldn’t rule out the possibility that the actor was hired, only for his performance to be cut from the film, making both Variety and Smith’s claims correct at the time each was made. Overall, the situation still feels very mysterious, but all will be revealed when Star Wars: Episode IX hits theaters on December 20th, 2019.

Hackers are reportedly cracking the iPhone using stolen Apple prototypes

We all know the story of the prototype iPhone 4 that was left at a bar, spoiling what could have been one of the biggest surprises in Apple history.

But have you heard the one about the stolen prototype iPhones that are still winding up in unintended hands — in this case, hackers bent on finding ways to break into Apple’s operating system?

That’s the focus of a new Motherboard investigation this week, which claims there’s now a gray market for “dev-fused” iPhone prototypes that have been stolen from Apple’s production lines. They’re devices which are uniquely valuable for helping security researchers find vulnerabilities because they run a less hardened version of the OS where root access is trivial to obtain, according to the report.

One of Captain Marvel’s post-credits scenes is great news for Avengers: Endgame

Spoilers ahead for Captain Marvel’s mid-credits and post-credits scenes, for Avengers: Infinity War, and for one big gag in Captain Marvel itself.

Back in 2008, when Nick Fury arrived at Tony Stark’s house to invite him to join the Avengers Initiative after the credits rolled, the sequence felt like most post-credit scenes did back then — a little in-joke for dedicated viewers who cared enough to sit all the way through the credits, instead of bolting for the doors the moment the action stopped. But over the past decade, Marvel’s post-credits scenes have become an institution. Occasionally, they’re just visual gags and callbacks to previous story elements, like Ant-Man and the Wasp’s 20-second view of Ant-Man’s abandoned house, with a...

German regulators tell Tesla to drop ‘gas savings’ from pricing

Tesla will stop factoring estimated fuel savings into the price of its cars in Germany, according to Reuters. The German Centre for Protection against Unfair Competition said Wednesday that Tesla agreed to be more straightforward with pricing on its website by March 20th.

The order pages of Tesla’s website currently feature multiple prices for each car, including ones that include “incentives and gas savings.” These adjusted prices show up next to the pictures of the company’s cars, while the actual sticker price (labeled the “before savings” price) is found at the bottom of the order page. The German association, also known as Wettbewerbszentrale, didn’t like this.

“Even if ‘savings’ could be realized, such an amount cannot be deducted...

Valve lays off 13 employees, reportedly slashing VR hardware division

Gaming company Valve confirmed today that it has laid off several full-time employees and contractors, possibly from its virtual reality hardware team. “Last month, 13 full time employees were let go and a portion of our contractor agreements were terminated. It’s an unfortunate part of business, but does not represent any major changes at the company. We thank those affected for their contribution and wish them well in future endeavors,” spokesperson Doug Lombardi told The Verge.

Valve didn’t confirm where the former employees worked, but yesterday, Reddit user 2flock posted a message, which is apparently from an anonymous Valve employee. “They fired like half the Valve hardware team recently ... Wonder how long it’ll be until the...

Disney is ending its vault program, giving Disney+ a huge boost in the streaming wars

Disney+, the company’s upcoming streaming service, will carry Disney’s entire catalog of animated films, ending Disney’s long-standing “vault” program. CEO Bob Iger told shareholders today that Disney+ “at some point fairly soon after launch” will carry films that “traditionally have been kept in a ‘vault’ and brought out basically every few years.”

That’s a major policy change for the company, which, until now, has deliberately created artificial shortages of its films via extremely limited re-releases. For example, a movie like 101 Dalmatians would have been available to purchase during its initial home release run before being placed in “the vault” for a lengthy period. Disney initiated the practice as a way to control its own market...

Facebook outlines plans to curb anti-vax conspiracy theories

Under fire for serving up anti-vaccine propaganda, Facebook announced today that it will remove groups and pages that share anti-vaccine misinformation from its recommendations. The company also pledged that it will stop allowing advertisers to target people who Facebook’s advertising algorithm identifies as interested in “vaccine controversies.”

The news comes three weeks after Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) sent a stern letter to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, criticizing Facebook and Instagram for “surfacing and recommending messages that discourage parents from vaccinating their children.” When kids don’t get vaccinated due to thoroughly debunked myths that vaccines cause diseases like autism, dangerous diseases like measles can spread....

How movie sites are dealing with review-bombing trolls

Last week, review site Rotten Tomatoes disabled a couple of long-standing features to fight a new kind of internet culture war. In advance of Captain Marvel’s release, it stopped letting users leave comments before a movie launches, and it removed a badge showing the percentage of people who indicated they wanted to see the film. “Unfortunately,” a staff blog post said, “we have seen an uptick in non-constructive input, sometimes bordering on trolling.”

Most online review platforms have encountered some kind of review-bombing — a term that broadly covers a coordinated effort to give a project an influx of negative ratings, based on some contentious issue that’s tangential to the project itself. Review-bombing isn’t universally condemned;...

Facebook Messenger had a vulnerability that could let hackers see who you contact

A previously reported Facebook vulnerability was similarly found in the company’s Messenger product, according to security research group Imperva. Nearly a year ago, Imperva researchers discovered that, through Messenger, a hacker could use “any website to expose who you have been messaging with.” The bug was disclosed to Facebook in November and subsequently patched.

Hackers could target a Facebook user’s web browser and exploit iframe elements to see which friends the user had talked to and which were not in the user’s contact list. Imperva confirmed the hackers couldn’t gain any other data from the attack.

Like the vulnerability in Facebook reported last November, Messenger users would have been vulnerable if they visited a malicious...

Can a judge order Elon Musk to delete his Twitter account?

Elon Musk’s tweets have riled up enforcement officials again, and the real question now is what the legal system is going to do about them. Last week, the Securities and Exchange Commission filed paperwork to consider Musk in contempt of court. That’s because the SEC says the Tesla CEO broke his settlement agreement — by sending out a tweet that disclosed material information about the electric carmaker without running it by a lawyer first. And so I found myself up late at night wondering if it’s possible that a judge might order Musk to delete his account.

Now remember: The entire reason the settlement exists in the first place is because Musk was tweeting wildly. Specifically, in August, Musk tweeted that he was planning to take Tesla...

How Bird plans to blanket the world with electric scooters without going bankrupt

Operating an electric scooter-sharing service is expensive and hard. The scooters break down, or they get vandalized or impounded by local law enforcement. Scaling that business globally, like Bird and Lime are trying to do, is even harder. Every scooter company today is operating at a loss, but Bird in particular has an interesting plan to spread the gospel of the scooter without going completely bankrupt.

It involves selling e-scooters to local entrepreneurs, providing them with advice and technical support to get started, letting them incur all the costs associated with maintenance and operations, and then taking a small percentage of each scooter trip. It’s called “Bird Platform,” which the company originally unveiled last...

Corsair’s K83 Wireless keyboard has a trackpad and half a gamepad built in

Corsair’s latest keyboard, the K83 Wireless, is the manufacturer’s new attempt at a keyboard that you can use on your lap in a living room. In addition to a laptop-style 76-key keyboard, the K83 also includes a joystick, two shoulder buttons, and a trackpad that supports up to four-finger gestures in Windows 10.

This joystick is the K83’s most unique aspect; it’s a pretty unusual inclusion on a keyboard. As well as allowing you to navigate menus, the joystick can also be set to emulate a mouse, which could be very useful in any game that would otherwise let you use it to control the game’s camera. In this mode, the two shoulder buttons stand in for the mouse’s left and right buttons, or you can click in the stick itself for a middle...

Microsoft’s cheapest Surface Book 2 could get a quad-core CPU soon

Surfacebook 2

Microsoft looks set to refresh its cheapest Surface Book 2 laptop in the coming weeks, according to retailer listings first spotted by WinFuture. The biggest change is expected to be the laptop’s CPU, which appears to be getting a bump from a dual-core i5-7300U to a quad core i5-8350U.

As well as adding two additional cores, the i5-8350U also modestly bumps the processor’s maximum boost clock speed up from 3.5GHz to 3.6GHz. Overall, that should result in a 50 percent rise in multi-core computing power. We saw the performance for ourselves during our review of the Surface Pro 6.

WinFuture notes that retailers have started listing the new 13-inch refresh for $1499 (€1569). That’s the same as the recommended pricing on the current 256GB...
