Earlier this week, it was officially announced that Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart share the Guinness World Record for longest career as a live-action Marvel superhero, having each lasted 16 years and 228 days in the X-Men franchise. And while it doesn’t look like any screen star is on the verge of beating that record anytime soon, Samuel L. Jackson certainly seems like one of the more viable candidates, with his run as Nick Fury now standing at just under 11 years.
During a press junket for Captain Marvel, Jackson was asked if he thinks he could stick around long enough in the MCU to take the record from Jackman and Stewart. Sure enough, the actor would be happy to give it a try if Marvel Studios would only let him:
“Not up to me. But if they want me to, I will.”
With the upcoming Avengers: Endgame expected to serve as the swan song for various Phase 1 players, Nick Fury may soon be one of the last heroes left standing from the saga’s early years. Nonetheless, the Avengers assembler shows no sign of slowing down, with the character already set to return in Spider-Man: Far From Home.
As a matter of fact, it’s currently looking very likely that Fury will be the only character to show up in all three of the MCU’s theatrical releases this year, with Endgame being the only somewhat uncertain entry in the 2019 trifecta. Beyond that, Jackson told The Hollywood Reporter last month that he “has no plans of retiring the character,” and “would happily play the part into his 80s,” suggesting that an extra five years or so could well be on the cards. Not bad for a guy who straight up died in his last Marvel movie.
But regardless of what the years have in store Nick Fury, we’ll be seeing him back on our screens when Captain Marvel comes out on March 8th.
