Venom’s Riz Ahmed Won’t Answer If He’s Playing Carnage

Venom will introduce Tom Hardy’s titular anti-hero, but it’ll also feature a bunch of other symbiote supervillain types, too. As it’s loosely based on the Lethal Protector and Planet of the Symbiotes comic book arcs, the Spider-Man spinoff movie will be digging deep into the world of the gloopy, parasitic creatures.

But will we see Carnage, the most famous symbiote outside of Venom? Since the film’s production began, fans have theorized that Riz Ahmed’s Carlton Drake, who seems to be the big bad of the movie as the head of the sinister Life Foundation, could turn out to be the host of the red-faced murderous symbiote. EW put the question to Ahmed in a recent interview but the actor was smart enough to dodge it entirely.

Laughing off the inquiry, he simply said:

“I can confirm I’ll be acting in Venom.“

EW then decided to press him for information on if he’d be part of the studio’s big plans to make a shared franchise out of the Marvel properties that they have the rights to – a project that’s been given the catchy title of Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters. Again, however, Ahmed was too smart to give anything away, deferring the question to the studio execs.

“You’ll have to ask the guys at Marvel.”

Putting the pieces together ourselves, we’re pretty sure Drake won’t turn out to be Carnage. For one, the trailers have revealed that he’ll bond with a different symbiote and become Riot instead. Also, reports from a while back said that Woody Harrelson would turn up in a post-credits scene as Cletus Kasady, the actual host of the Carnage symbiote in the comics. The intention is presumably that he’ll appear in a major role in the planned sequel.

One way or another, though, we’ll find out what’s really happening when Venom slithers into cinemas on October 5th.

Tom Hardy Wants To See Venom Crossover With The Avengers

For many comic book fans, Venom‘s a character whose existence and origins are inherently linked with his old pal Spider-Man, which puts a considerable amount of pressure on director Ruben Fleischer’s upcoming movie to convince audiences that Eddie Brock and his symbiote alter ego can thrive on their own terms.

But that doesn’t mean some form of crossover can’t happen down the road. Already, we’ve heard that the only reason the spinoff went for a PG-13 rating was so that the franchise could potentially bring in Spidey at some point and now, star Tom Hardy’s expressed interest in seeing Venom not just interact with Peter Parker, but the rest of the Avengers, too.

Speaking with MTV this week to promote the film, here’s what the actor said:

“My littlest ones, they watch Spider-Man and Venom quite comfortably…so it’s not like they’re scared by him. At the same time, there’s a lot within the real estate that you can actually imbue with a complete sense of gratuitous violence, and if you wanted to I think you’ve got the right people for that job if you want to push, because that’s where I’d love to go, and I’d love to go through all of the Avengers as well with him, but that’s above my pay grade. I want to run with the established family though, why not?”

Meanwhile, Hardy’s co-star, Riz Ahmed, was on hand as well and opened up on what would happen should the symbiote ever cross paths with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

“I think he would just try to eat all of them,” Ahmed says. That’s the thing with Venom it’s not really so much like good and evil. It’s like ‘Am I hungry, or am I not? And if I’m hungry, I’ll try and eat you.’ You might try to eat the Hulk. I think Venom and Hulk is a good matchup.”

Hardy adds, “He’s more about himself. He’s a very self-centered character and contained in that aspect. He who has the biggest hands eats the most. He’s quite mercenary in that aspect.”

While there’s been no firm confirmation that Venom will one day venture outside the confines of Sony’s Marvel Universe, it seems highly likely that it’ll happen should the pic prove successful. Remember, we once thought it’d be impossible for the wall-crawler to be an onscreen Avenger, but now it’s a reality.

Could Eddie Brock eventually find himself up against Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, then? Perhaps, but first, Venom needs to slither into theaters on October 5th so that Sony can gauge the reaction and response to the symbiote. Although, with box office analysts predicting a strong opening weekend in the region of $60M, it certainly seems as if the PG-13 rated movie is on the verge of becoming one of fall’s biggest releases.

Michael Myers Actor Reveals What Was Different About Filming New Halloween

David Gordon Green’s upcoming Halloween sees the return of several familiar elements from the classic 1978 original. For one thing, Jamie Lee Curtis reprises her role as Laurie Strode for the first time since 2002’s Halloween: Resurrection. On top of that, director John Carpenter is also involved once more in the franchise, albeit on composing duties, and the original Michael Myers, Nick Castle, is back playing the old killer, if only in a quick cameo.

But while a lot from the first Halloween has been carried over to this forthcoming release, Castle can also single out one thing that was new on the set, and ironically enough, it was the pressure felt to live up to the original.

“The one thing that was absolutely, totally different, but so sweet, was how, not referential they were of doing something that was so important to so many people, but they understood the stakes involved, that they were mad fans of the original one. They loved not only my performance but they … which I loved … they loved my films. That made it very different and special.”

Indeed, Green has already gone on record stating his intentions to honor Carpenter’s 40-year-old series-starter. Plus, with Carpenter himself involved in the project, the legendary filmmaker was even able to provide a few pointers, with the completed picture ultimately earning his approval.

But beyond this reverence for the original, Castle stressed that the atmosphere on set for the new movie wasn’t all that different from what he experienced all those decades ago.

“Very much the same. First of all, the writers and the director and his crew seemed like the same age we were when we were doing it, early 30s. They were a family like [director John Carpenter’s] family, in terms of the movie crews that he was putting together by that time.”

Another element of the 1978 original that has seen a return to the franchise with this latest installment is good reviews, ensuring that anticipation is high for the upcoming Blumhouse picture. We’ll see if the new Halloween can live up to the hype and earn its place in this decades-spanning series when it hits theaters on October 19th.

James Wan And The Nun Writer Board Train To Busan Remake

Train to Busan, Yeon Sang-Ho’s smart South Korean zombie thriller is in line for a Hollywood remake.

We learned as much a few years back, when it was said that Sony and Fox were both hoping to get their hands on the package. Soon after, a bidding war sparked into life and now, as the project continues to develop, New Line, Universal, Paramount, Lionsgate and Screen Gems are all in the mix, too.

Or at least, that’s according to Deadline, who also tell us that the remake of the 2016 film has The Nun and IT scribe Gary Dauberman on board to pen the screenplay, while horror maestro James Wan will produce. No word on a director just yet, but it’s possible either of those men could end up taking the job. Even if not, though, you can bet that whoever gets behind the camera will be an equally impressive talent.

Of course, this remake isn’t the only thing that fans of the film can look forward to, as a sequel was announced not that long ago. It’s said to be operating under the codename ‘Peninsula’ and will apparently “revisit the same zombie virus that was seen in the original movie, except this time the focus will be expanded to the entire Korean peninsula.”

Details beyond that remain hard to come by, but viewers can at least take comfort in the fact that Yeon Sang-Ho wants to continue his apocalyptic saga with a follow-up that outstrips its predecessor in scope and ambition. It’s got a lot to live up to, to be sure, but we’re quietly confident that the filmmaker can pull it off and deliver a worthy sequel.

And as for the Train to Busan remake, well, after flickering into life a few years ago, it’s now gaining a considerable amount of steam and once a director’s locked in, we’ll be sure to let you know.

Microsoft announces Xbox One keyboard and mouse support with Razer partnership

Microsoft is enabling keyboard and mouse support on the Xbox One. Select Xbox testers will be able to trial this new support in the coming weeks, and Microsoft is teaming up with Razer so Xbox One users can purchase hardware that taps into the company’s Chroma lighting effects. Most wired and wireless USB keyboards and mice will work on the Xbox One, and it will be up to developers to support this in games.

“Mouse and keyboard input is not enabled by default for games,” explains Jason Ronald, director of program management for Xbox. Blockbuster Qualcomm lawsuit claims Apple stole modem tech and gave it to Intel

Qualcomm says that Apple has been stealing its wireless technology for several years in order to eventually rid itself of the need to rely on Qualcomm components. Apple is alleged to have given Qualcomm’s code to Intel, in order to boost Intel’s modem speeds, which are known to be slower.

The claims come in the latest update to Qualcomm and Apple’s blockbuster legal battle, which started close to two years ago with Apple claiming that Qualcomm was abusing its position as the dominant supplier of smartphone modems to demand unreasonable fees.

Telltale under fire for prioritizing The Walking Dead conclusion in wake of mass layoffs

Developer Telltale Games, maker of the popular episodic narrative games The Walking Dead and The Wolf Among Us, is still dealing with the aftermath of an effective studio closure last Friday that saw around 250 employees, or 90 percent of its workforce, laid off without severance. Google is adding much more helpful search to Android Messages

After giving the app a fresh coat of paint and a new dark mode in recent weeks, Google is now adding some helpful features to Android Messages. In a blog post today, the company showed off a more powerful search experience that users will start seeing this week, which will let them find specific content types (images, videos, etc.) spanning all conversations or on an individual-chat basis.

So you’ll be able to tap on someone’s name and scroll down a sleek list of messages, media, and even locations that you and the other person have exchanged.
