Marvel fans are desperate to find out who’s who in the MCU Illuminati

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will see Benedict Cumberbatch’s character facing some serious consequences for screwing with the fabric of reality in No Way Home. It appears his spell to force everyone to forget Peter Parker caught the attention of a group of very powerful people — and they’re not happy.

These are the Illuminati. In Marvel Comics, they’re a secret society comprised of Reed Richards, Namor, Tony Stark, Black Bolt, Charles Xavier, and Strange himself, who collectively manipulate world events from the shadows.

The MCU version appears to be more extradimensionally preoccupied, with membership drawn from across the multiverse, including a variant of Patrick Stewart’s Professor X. Now fans are frantically theorizing about who else will be present.

Fortunately, we only have a week’s wait to find out for sure. However, with the social media and review embargo expiring early next week, expect spoilers to come in thick and fast on Twitter. These will likely confirm or deny which cameos are in the movie, and though Marvel has been perhaps a little too open in trailers and TV spots, we suspect they’re still holding back some huge surprises.

That said, if Tom Cruise really is in this movie as Tony Stark/Iron Man, people are going to lose their minds.

Andrew Garfield explains what sets ‘Under the Banner of Heaven’ apart from other true-crime shows

Andrew Garfield may have announced he is taking a break from acting, but the Oscar-nominated actor has left us with another spellbinding performance. He stars as Detective Jeb Pyre in the FX on Hulu miniseries Under the Banner of Heaven, based on the book of the same name.

While promoting the true-crime series in a chat with Entertainment Weekly, he spoke about reading the book a decade ago, as well as the religious extremism that sometimes pushes people to commit heinous crimes.

I read the book over 10 years ago, and I just loved it. I felt riveted and compelled, and I just find the themes and subject matter so fascinating: how fundamentalism and extremism can lead to enabling men to do horrific acts of violent evil in the name of God and love, and they avoid blaming their own egocentric desire. The delusion was just so fascinating to me.

The uniqueness of this particular story comes from the fact that the series’ antagonists, Ron and Dan Lafferty, believed their crimes were committed as a result of divine revelation, which apparently led them to murder a mother and daughter in Utah in the eighties.

Garfield leads the series as the detective charged with investigating the murders and begins to question his faith in the process. Sam Worthington takes on the role of Ron, while Wyatt Russel stars as Dan. The first two episodes of Under the Banner of Heaven are now available to stream on Hulu, and the remaining four episodes will air weekly until May 26.

The Jason Sudeikis/Olivia Wilde situation is giving fans ‘Ted Lasso’ vibes

Fans took to Twitter to discuss how Jason Sudeikis‘s life imitated his art when his attorneys served actor and filmmaker Olivia Wilde with legal documents on stage at CinemaCon on April 26.

Deadline confirms that Wilde was handed an envelope containing custody papers during the presentation of her new film Don’t Worry, Darling at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas, Nevada. She opened it on stage but managed to keep calm and continue with the presentation of her new film.

Sudeikis claims he was unaware that his attorneys were planning to serve Wilde with the papers in such a dramatic fashion. His representative says that delivery of the envelope was “solely be up to the process service company involved” and that Sudeikis “would never condone her being served in such an inappropriate manner.”

For some fans, the incident was like a call back to the folksy football coach Sudeikis plays on Ted Lasso, the Apple TV plus dramedy series he co-created and stars in.

One fan felt it was reminiscent of one scene in particular.

‘Shazam 2’ makes meta ‘Fast & Furious’ reference to Helen Mirren

The first sneak peek of Shazam! Fury of the Gods has arrived and features a scene between Asher Angel and Helen Mirren with a hilarious meta-reference to the Fast & Furious franchise.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods sees Billy Batson (Asher Angel) face off with the villainous Daughters of Atlas, Hespera (Helen Mirren) and Kalypso (Lucy Liu). The trailer shows a scene between Batson and Hespera in which he says he’s seen all the Fast and Furious films, so he knows that family always wins, just as his super-powered family appears on the scene. Mirren stars as the nefarious Queenie in the Fast and Furious franchise.

Germain Lussier of Gizmodo and i09 viewed the trailer at CinemaCon and shared a tweet describing the clip:

The scene with Wonder Woman features a surprising plot twist that sets the tone for Batson’s confrontation with Hespera later in the film.

The teaser was so well received that some attendees are tipping Shazam! Fury of the Gods to become one of the most successful films of the year. Director David Sandberg later took to Twitter to announce that a full trailer is on the way in the not too distant future.

Wonder Woman cameo confirmed for ‘Shazam 2’, but not how you think

A preview of Shazam! Fury of the Gods features a cameo with Wonder Woman and a surprising plot twist.

Per Screen Rant, the clip depicts Shazam (Zachary Levi) and Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) at a Parisian restaurant, where he tells her that he can’t commit to a relationship with her. The Amazonian rises from her seat and starts to exit, but stops in her tracks, facing Shazam and revealing that she is Merlin, who tells Shazam that the Daughters of Atlas are after him. A dragon is seen landing near the pair, and Shazam eventually realizes he is dreaming.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods is the follow-up to Shazam! (2019) and continues the story of Billy Batson. In the first iteration, Batson was an ordinary boy who obtained extraordinary powers and could transform himself into a grown-up superhero by shouting the titular name. The sequel sees Billy nearing adulthood and facing a different set of challenges than he did in the previous film, which adds a layer of teenage charm to his dream about a date with Wonder Woman.

Wonder Woman fans can also catch a glimpse of her in another upcoming movie in the DC Extended Universe. Selfies posted by Gal Gadot on her social media accounts suggest that the Wonder Woman star will also be making a cameo in The Flash, scheduled for release on June 23, 2023.

However, fans won’t have to wait that long to see Wonder Woman as Shazam! Fury of the Gods is scheduled to premiere just in time for the holiday season on December 19, 2022.

Shazam! was a movie full of magic with an extra dose of emotion and Zachary Levi doesn’t want to lose that in Shazam! Fury of the Gods.

Warner Bros. began their CinemaCon presentation with the DC sequel starring Levi who shared the aspects that he felt made the first movie so special.

“We don’t want to veer from the magic we were able to find in the first movie, balancing action, comedy, drama and heart. That’s a massive part of what people connected to in the first movie.”

Shazam!, released in 2019, was a superhero story that’s really about discovering your true family. Billy Batson is an orphaned child, who is deemed a nuisance for running away from his foster homes in search of his mother, but when he comes to live with Victor and Rosa Vasquez and their five children, he learns the real meaning of family. His already complicated life gets more tangled when he is chosen by the wizard Shazam to possess the power of the gods because of his pure heart.

Billy goes on adventures with his new friend/foster brother Freddy Freeman who helps him discover his new powers. By saying his magical name, a lightning bolt strikes him and he grows into the mighty Shazam. He fights the superpowered Thaddeus Sivana (Mark Strong) who wants Shazam’s powers for himself and the Seven Deadly Sins. By the end of the movie, he realizes that in order to win he needs to rely on his siblings and he shares his powers with them, turning them into superheroes who help him save the day.

In Fury of the Gods, Shazam will battle the three daughters of the Greek god – Atlas Hespera (Helen Miren), Kalypso (Lucy Liu), and the yet-unnamed third daughter played by Rachel Zegler. While the trio will be aided by dragons, harpies, and cyclops in the sequel, Shazam will once again have his superpowered ready to help him navigate the troubled waters.

Many new scenes from the film were shown at CinemaCon, and although the footage isn’t permitted to be posted online, reports have stated that Wonder Woman appears in the sequel but it isn’t the Amazonian warrior we know.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods comes to theaters this Dec. 16.

The internet is still reeling from the news that the guy from Iron Man 2 has bought Twitter. The 2010 movie was Marvel Studios’ first sequel, and demonstrated some early jitters for the MCU, with behind-the-scenes drama resulting in director Jon Favreau ruling himself out of directing The Avengers (though he went on to become an onscreen fixture of the franchise as Happy Hogan).

It remains to be seen what the guy from Iron Man 2 will do with his new purchase, though many Twitter personalities are fearing that there’s going to be a crackdown on criticism of him, or that his desire for free speech will give free rein to the worst people on the internet, but the guy from Iron Man 2 has since clarified his position.

He’d make a good fit for a courtroom scene in She-Hulk, or perhaps attempting to advise Riri Williams as she makes her MCU debut in Ironheart.

Debate rages over whether or not ‘Deadpool 2’ has the best cameo ever

Deadpool 2 was a very rare thing in cinema: a sequel that’s a notable improvement over the first installment. Don’t misunderstand, the opener is still a wild ride, but the sequel cranks up the action, features a great foil to the Merc with the Mouth in Josh Brolin’s Cable, and has an excellent cast of supporting characters.

Among the highlights is Deadpool’s short-lived X-Force team, which results in one of the movie’s funniest gags. Recruit Vanisher does exactly what you’d expect, being almost entirely invisible throughout the movie. It’s only when he’s fried by a powerline that we see his true form: Hollywood legend Brad Pitt.

With Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness promising more superhero cameos, fans are looking back and are arguing whether Pitt’s appearance in Deadpool 2 is the best to date.

Here’s hoping Deadpool 3 continues this trend, though as yet we don’t know when Ryan Reynolds is slipping back into the red and black suit. The latest we’ve heard is that regular writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese have been brought back to work on the script, with Free Guy and The Adam Project director Shawn Levy at the helm.

Sadly, there’s not even a murmur of a release date. If Deadpool 3 is to come out in 2023, they’d been to begin shooting sometime over the summer, but comments by Levy indicate it’s been quietly bumped back to 2024.

Fingers crossed some firmer news emerges on Deadpool 3 soon.

Fans gush over the internet’s boyfriend Andrew Garfield, simply for the fact he exists

Andrew Garfield has had quite a stellar year, with the actor seeming to have been all over our screens across the last 12 months. From blockbuster returns to award-winning musicals, he’s certainly been prolific, and the internet cannot get enough.

Since September last year, Garfield has appeared as television evangelist Jim Bakker in The Eyes of Tammy Faye, the composer and playwright Jonathon Larson in tick, tick … BOOM!, and then to the delight of Spider-Man fans everywhere, he returned as Peter Parker alongside Tobey Maguire and Tom Holland in No Way Home. The 38 year-old was additionally nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Larson, won a Golden Globe for the same performance, and played a key role in the sixth highest-grossing hit in history.

Fans have been gushing over the actor on Twitter, praising his acting, his ability to wear a suit, and are just generally happy to have him on this planet.

Despite knocking it out of the park recently, Garfield hasn’t slowed down yet though and attended the premiere for his new Hulu series Under the Banner of Heaven last week. The true-crime drama features the star as a detective looking into the murder of a woman, which shakes his very faith. Fans are already excited to be getting more content, and reviews seem to suggest the actor is on top form.

‘Lightyear’ director says the movie has spinoff potential of its own

With just a little over one month to go until its theatrical release, Lightyear director Angus MacLane is revealing the chance for the film to receive a spin-off of its own. The upcoming movie — which will introduce an origin story for Space Ranger superhero Buzz Lightyear — is the latest installment in the mega Toy Story franchise and will serve as a spin-off to the films that focus on the action figure Buzz Lightyear.

While speaking with Screen Rant, MacLane compared Lightyear to Star Wars when it comes to its open-ended nature of the events within the film, while teasing that a spin-off of the movie is completely possible.

To me, I look at it as what I liked about Star Wars is that it always allowed for the expansion of what the world could be. I think that that open endedness is often what’s most exciting, it’s when you start closing those doors and connecting those things that it becomes less compelling. So our focus right now is honestly finishing this movie, but it’s meant to be this like island of a narrative that is very much we don’t start when Buzz is born. It was very much this thing that you’d imagined stuff before and afterwards, I think connecting it is risky, but you know, who knows?

MacLane has already compared the Pixar film to Star Wars before, and it appears as though Lightyear’s overall influence holds the power to inspire a potential spin-off. Additionally, folks are already pining for Woody — arguably the most significant character in the Toy Story film series — to receive a well-deserved solo film of his own.

Don’t miss Lightyear when it arrives in theaters on June 17.

‘The Northman’ inspires fans to revisit ‘The Green Knight’

Fans have taken to Twitter to rave about The Northman and some of the striking parallels it shares with The Green Knight.

The Northman premiered on April 22, mesmerizing moviegoers with the 10th-century tale of Amleth (Alexander Skarsgård), an Icelandic prince, and his bloody vendetta against his murderous, power-hungry uncle. Like The Green Knight, it is based on an epic poem from the Middle Ages about virtue, violence and vengeance.

The Green Knight is a medieval fantasy film that tells the story of Sir Gawain (Dev Patel), a knight of the Round Table and nephew of King Arthur, who accepts the Faustian challenge of the mystical Green Knight.

Both films are inspired by two epic legends from the Middle Ages, both are centered on male protagonists who assert their dominance through contests with formidable rivals, and both men are buckling under the weight of complicated maternal influences. In addition to this, both men are beholden to strict codes of honor from which they cannot deviate. As Amleth and Gawain carve out their places in society, they are compelled to seek validation with terrifying displays of strength designed to strike fear in anyone who might seek to challenge them.

One of the most deranged action movies you’ll ever see harvests success on streaming

Even though there’s no recipe, rhyme or reason to decide which movies end up securing cult classic status, it was obvious that Shoot ‘Em Up was destined to find it from the second genre fans were first made aware of the project.

An absolutely insane, gruesomely violent, foul-mouthed, disarmingly charming, and completely unhinged orgy of sex, swearing, and gunplay, it fit the template down to a tee. Clive Owen plays it so straight that he’s deliberately hilarious as the deadpan Mr. Smith, an assassin with a fondness for both carrots and bullets.

He saves a newborn baby from would-be killers, before teaming up with a lactating prostitute to protect the child from Paul Giamatti’s scenery-inhaling rival, who’d been tasked to recover the child so that a dying senator’s ambition to extend his lifespan by harvesting infant bone marrow can be accomplished. Obviously.

Writer and director Michael Davis wanted to create an exaggerated homage to his favorite action classics, and he definitely achieved that with Shoot ‘Em Up. Dialing things so far past 11 that even Spinal Tap would have no clue what the hell is going on, the film’s tongue remains firmly planted in cheek across a rapid 86 minutes that provides relentlessly bonkers entertainment from first to last.

As per FlixPatrol, Shoot ‘Em Up has been embarking on a streaming renaissance this weekend on the iTunes charts, 15 years after flopping at the box office by failing to recoup even $27 million of the $39 million budget.

Mention it to any diehard supporter of blood, guts, action, and octane, though, and you’ll instantly see their eyes light up with delirious glee.

‘Doctor Strange 2’ fans go back and forth on the Tom Cruise rumors

While things haven’t quite reached Spider-Man: No Way Home levels, when any character to have even glanced in the direction of someone associated with Peter Parker being linked to a cameo, speculation nonetheless runs rampant around Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

So far, the only surprise guest we can bank on showing up is Patrick Stewart’s Charles Xavier, which leaves the playing field wide open for internet-breaking shocks. One of the most popular recurring slices of scuttlebutt is that Tom Cruise will show up as a Superior Iron Man variant of Tony Stark, although nobody seems too sure as to where it originated.

In that time we’ve seen some shoddy Photoshops claiming to be behind the scenes images showing Cruise in a motion capture suit, while plenty of fans are adamant his alternate version of the genius billionaire playboy philanthropist was teased in plain sight during the first trailer.

As you can see below, the debate has rather neatly been boiled down to one tweet and one reply, which perfectly encapsulates both sides of the divide.

It should be noted that we can’t rule out with 100% certainty that the A-list megastar isn’t in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness until either May 6, or three days prior when the review embargo lifts and the internet inevitably becomes awash with spoilers.

With a running time of just 126 minutes, there’s not a huge amount of screentime to go around, so there’s every chance the movie won’t feature anywhere near as many cameos as some may be expecting.

Streaming subscribers get caught up in a labyrinthine mystery thriller

Charlie Hunnam might be handsome, jacked, and charming, but he’s a much better fit for being an actor than he is a movie star. That’s not designed to be a slight on his talents, but his performances in Pacific Rim and King Arthur: Legend of the Sword leave plenty to be desired when compared to his work in the likes of Papillon, The Lost City of Z, Jungleland, The Gentlemen, and Last Looks.

The latter in particular deserved to find a much bigger audience than it did, with the literary adaptation quietly landing on VOD this past February. The labyrinthine crime thriller marked Hunnam’s first executive producer credit, and he clearly invested a lot of time and effort into doing Charlie Waldo justice.

The idiosyncratic former cop and private investigator lives alone in the woods, vowing never to own more than 100 items at any given time. When a famous TV actor becomes the prime suspect in the murder of his wife, Waldo is drawn out of isolation and plunged into a mystery that involves organized crime, industry executives, double-crosses, cover ups, and the disappearance of his former flame.

As per FlixPatrol, the underrated gem and potential future cult classic has been going down a treat among iTunes customers, having risen up the most-watched rankings by reaching the Top 10 in multiple countries.

Backed by an eclectic ensemble that finds Mel Gibson on delightfully hammy form as prestigious British thespian Alastair Pinch, there’s an awful lot going on in Last Looks at any given time, but it hits plenty of the right notes to deliver a winning old-fashioned thriller that twists and turns its way towards a fitting resolution.
