James Gunn addresses rumors of studio interference on ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’
With the notable exception of Thor: The Dark World, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has very rarely been plagued by rumors of studio interference, which is incredibly ironic when you consider the accusation being leveled at James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
The filmmaker is currently splitting his time between both of Hollywood’s marquee superhero franchises, but he’ll be bidding farewell to the MCU in just a few short months when his band of cosmic misfits headline their long-awaited third movie. Several major DC projects have infamously been subject to the grubby fingerprints of executive meddling – most notably David Ayer’s Suicide Squad and Joss Whedon’s Justice League – which is something Gunn will be looking to eradicate for a more harmonious future.

‘Star Wars’ stans wonder if the panic button marked ‘Disney Plus’ could redeem Rey’s polarizing story
Perhaps unfairly, Daisy Ridley’s Rey Skywalker is often at the center of criticism about Disney’s sequel trilogy. For many Star Wars fans, she’s emblematic of the project’s flaws: the eventual reveal she’s Palpatine’s granddaughter doesn’t make sense, she’s pilloried as a Mary Sue for being naturally good at everything, and making her the embodiment of “all the Jedi” doesn’t feel earned.
Maybe this isn’t necessarily a problem with Rey herself, but with the movies she was in, and the fact that her story wasn’t planned out ahead of time. Now, fans are wondering whether there’s room for redemption with a solo show on Disney Plus:

The official ‘Glass Onion’ account continues to bask in the warm glow of universal acclaim
Everyone seems to be loving Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, Rian Johnson’s sequel to the similarly successful 2019 movie Knives Out.
After 346 reviews, the 2022 sequel, which sees Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc take on a new murder mystery, is sitting pretty at a 94% rating on review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. The people behind the official Glass Onion account took no time being smug about it.

The first installment in a severely overlooked disaster saga survives a streaming tidal wave
As you can imagine, the disaster genre doesn’t often tend to lead to a multi-film franchise, because there’s only so much destruction that can go around. Norway clearly wasn’t listening, though, with 2015’s The Wave igniting what currently stands as a trilogy, but could yet spawn additional installments.
Directed by Roar Uthaug, the mastermind behind the failed attempt at rebooting Tomb Raider and Netflix’s most successful foreign-language feature ever Troll, the fairly by-the-numbers story finds a geologist and his family running for their lives and fighting for survival when a 250-foot tidal wave begins wreaking untold devastation.

James Cameron battling ‘Top Gun’ for box office supremacy is giving serious 1986 vibes
There’s a reason studios give James Cameron massive budgets and let him do whatever he wants. Throughout his career, he’s taken on massive projects that have had industry insiders making dire predictions for a box office flop.
In the 1990s, Titanic was widely considered to be a cinematic disaster in the making (box office $2.2 billion), Avatar had naysayers saying audiences wouldn’t turn up for weird blue cat people (box office $2.9 billion), and most recently Avatar: The Way of Water was a said to be a sequel made far too late (box office $1 billion and counting).

2022 marks the end of a Marvel and ‘Star Wars’ box office stranglehold that’s lasted over a decade
Death, taxes, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe dominating the box office are three of the very few certainties in life, but a streak that’s stretched on for a decade is poised to come to an end thanks to the one-two punch of Top Gun: Maverick and Avatar: The Way of Water.
Every year without fail since 2014, one of the two highest-grossing movies of the year on a global level has hailed from either Kevin Feige’s all-conquering superhero franchise, or fellow Disney-owned behemoth Star Wars. We may not have had a brand new blockbuster set in a galaxy far, far away since The Rise of Skywalker, but the MCU keeps churning them out like never before.

With Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery Rian Johnson has cemented himself as a modern master of the whodunnit. Both this and the opening installment play a perfect game of subverting audience expectations of the well-worn genre, with Knives Out apparently showing us the murder midway through the movie, and Glass Onion only revealing the characters’ true motivations in a lengthy flashback at around the same point.

‘Star Wars’ theory suggests Palpatine was much better at playing politics than he was as Emperor
Say what you will about Star Wars‘ Emperor Palpatine, but the guy sure knew how to play the long game. Prior to The Phantom Menace, he concocted a sinister plan to slowly take control of the Galactic Senate, dismantle the Jedi Order, and install himself as an all-powerful Imperial ruler. Then, as we saw in the prequels, he executed it almost flawlessly.
After that, things fell apart surprisingly quickly. The Empire lasted only 24 years before the Rebels’ decisive victory at the Battle of Endor, which saw the second Death Star destroyed and culminated in the deaths of both Darth Vader and Palpatine (well, temporarily in his case). Now, fans are concluding that while Palpatine was an A-plus schemer, he may not have been the best at actually ruling the galaxy with an iron fist.

A haunting psychological thriller brainwashes a new cult of followers on streaming
Given that she’s been a key player in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for close to a decade, and comfortably stands as one of the most popular stars on the planet, it’s incredible to think that Elizabeth Olsen only made her onscreen acting debut a little over 10 years ago in Martha Marcy May Marlene.
It was a hell of an arrival onto the scene, too, with the actress instantly blowing any accusations that she was hoping to piggyback on her siblings’ success and ride the coattails of being the third Olsen sister to stardom so far out of the water that they ended up in the stratosphere.

‘Eternals’ fans crossing their fingers tighter than ever as new sequel speculation emerges
Eternals remains one of the most unique films in the vast MCU lineup. Chloé Zhao’s epic trip through the franchise’s prehistory and its team of immortal superheroes stands apart from everything else we’ve seen from Marvel Studios. That may be why it was a relative disappointment at the box office, though it still managed to make $400 million on a $200 million budget.
Talk is finally beginning to build of an official Eternals 2 announcement, bolstered by a reveal from Gilgamesh actor Don Lee’s agency that “Eternals 2 and other global projects he’ll be appearing in are planned to be produced.” Despite a Harry Styles-teasing credits scene, it was by no means guaranteed that a full sequel would ever happen, so this tidbit of information has fans celebrating.

James Gunn innocently spreads festive goodwill, Marvel and DC fans inevitably go to war in the comments
It can’t be a coincidence that James Gunn has gotten a lot less active on Twitter in the weeks since he first assumed his duties as co-CEO of DC Studios, and began breaking the bad news that diehard fans of the franchise didn’t want to hear.
The SnyderVerse is in the final stages of being torn apart, Henry Cavill’s Superman has been exiled for good in favor of another reboot, and Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam is looking increasingly likely to go down in the history books as an embarrassing footnote that saw The Rock fly a touch too close to the sun in terms of self-promotion and overconfidence.

‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ deleted a pivotal scene inspired by a 1970s martial arts classic
Even though the movie ended up running for a hefty 161 minutes, there was plenty more of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever that ended up left on the cutting room floor, with director Ryan Coogler excising countless additional scenes for the sake of trimming down the sequel to a more manageable length.
In all honesty, it’s pretty remarkable that the recent box office smash came in at under three hours given that it needed to address the passing of Chadwick Boseman, pick up from where its predecessor left off on a narrative level, hand Shuri a substantial enough arc that justified her ascension to the titular mantle, debut Namor and the associated characters/motivations/lore of Talokan, and lay the groundwork for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe at large as the final chapter of Phase Four.

Juicy MCU rumor claims ‘Eternals’ ending could have a huge say on the X-Men’s beginning
Outside of a throwaway Easter Egg buried in an episode of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, Marvel Cinematic Universe fans have been waiting patiently for the end of Eternals to be addressed in a significant fashion.
In the aftermath of the franchise’s worst-reviewed installment ever releasing into theaters in November of last year, there was much speculation that the presence of Tiamut sticking halfway out of the ocean would go on to directly inform Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, with scuttlebutt claiming that Namor and the Atlanteans would be displaced and driven to the surface as a result.

Even before you discover just how opinion-splitting the movie proved to be between critics and crowds, the mere existence of something like Prisoners of the Ghostland was always guaranteed to have the potential to be beloved by some, and detested by others.
After all, we’re talking about a dystopian neo-Western headlined by Nicolas Cage playing a character literally named Hero, who gets strapped into a leather jumpsuit rigged with explosives at the behest of the criminal overlord that rules over a place called Samurai Town, tasking our intrepid protagonist to track down his missing granddaughter in exchange for his freedom.

With James Gunn leaving the SnyderVerse in tatters, its most polarizing figure undergoes a reevaluation
Having remained dedicated to the cause for over half a decade, even the most hardcore of SnyderVerse supporters would have been forced to swallow the bitterest pill once James Gunn and Peter Safran began dismantling the mythology brick-by-brick after being appointed as DC Studios co-CEOs.
Even though the restoration and resurrection of the filmmaker’s mythology was never truly on the cards, up until recently there was an encouraging chance that Snyder’s Justice League team could at least be reassembled onscreen for a second round after being butchered by Joss Whedon and then revitalized exclusively on streaming.

Charlie Cox categorically denies upcoming MCU cameo, but he is best friends with Andrew Garfield
In hindsight, one of the funniest things about the buildup to Spider-Man: No Way Home was Andrew Garfield repeatedly denying he was in the movie, which happened a lot considering he was on the press circuit for both Netflix musical Tick, Tick… Boom! and biographical drama The Eyes of Tammy Faye right around the time the hype train pulled out of the station.
Tom Holland also spent months claiming he was the only Peter Parker in the threequel, and while nobody was surprised when Garfield and Tobey Maguire swung by the multiversal extravaganza, it nonetheless took the roof off multiplexes all over the world. In a similar vein, Charlie Cox categorically denying he’ll show up in Deadpool 3 has an air of the familiar.

A new LLC registered by Marvel stirs up ‘World War Hulk’ speculation
Rumors of an MCU World War Hulk movie have been building for years. The comic arc of the same name is generally considered one of the greatest modern Hulk stories, showing the green giant angrier than he’s ever been, and out for revenge against practically every character in the Marvel universe.
Elements from the run appeared in Thor: Ragnarok, but Marvel Studios have not developed a solo Hulk movie since 2008 due to a rights issue with Universal Pictures. That situation may or may not be ending soon, leaving Marvel open to bring Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk story to a barnstorming conclusion.

The Taika Waititi hate train will keep on rolling after his first post-‘Love and Thunder’ movie gets delayed by 5 months
Somewhere along the line, Marvel Cinematic Universe fans instantly turned on Taika Waititi, with Thor: Love and Thunder comfortably proving to be the most polarizing movie in the constantly-divisive Phase Four, and perhaps even the most opinion-splitting installment overall depending on how you feel about She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.
Having been praised to the heavens for reinventing the Odinson in Ragnarok, the filmmaker came under heavy and sustained fire for overindulging himself a little too much on the follow-up. Of course, that shouldn’t gloss over the fact that the Academy Award winner boasts a track record of critical and commercial success over the last decade that few can match, but the doubters now have to wait even longer to see if they’ll be won over by his return to independent cinema.

It’s been half a decade since ‘The Last Jedi,’ but the Holdo maneuver is still getting picked apart
We are now five long years out from Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and it remains a hot topic of conversation amongst fans. At this point, it seems like the debate will last forever, with fans having taken firm sides on Rian Johnson’s grumpy hermit Luke Skywalker and his argument that the Force shouldn’t be reserved for a few aristocratic space bloodlines. Above all that, there’s one scene in particular that leaves an itch that still can’t be scratched.
This is, of course, the infamous Holdo Maneuver. Faced with an apparently unwinnable battle against the First Order, Laura Dern’s Admiral Holdo has a stunning final roll of the dice up her sleeve. She turns her cruiser around to face them, fires up her hyperspace drive, and executes a lightspeed kamikaze strike on the First Order fleet.

‘Star Wars’ fans remain split on a canon-changing shift in ‘The Rise of Skywalker’ dynamics
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker almost single-handedly sunk Star Wars. The movie should have been the bombastic conclusion to the sequel trilogy, though a production nightmare combined with Disney and Lucasfilm running scared from the negative reception to The Last Jedi resulted in a confusing, poorly thought-out, and laughably ill-conceived story. We won’t go into details, but let’s just say “somehow Palpatine returned” and leave it at that.
Anyway, now fans are picking over one of the key moments in the film that’s been raising eyebrows ever since 2019. In the finale, Kylo Ren finally makes a turn towards the light by sacrificing himself for Rey, bringing her back for a kiss just before he dies and returns to the Force. With the benefit of hindsight, is there anything to like in this scene?

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery will soon make its debut on Netflix, having impressed critics and audiences who saw it during its brief theatrical run. Johnson has additionally confirmed there’s going to be one more familiar face from Knives Out along for the ride, though he’s hoping most viewers won’t realize he’s back. This is Noah Segan, who played one of the cops in the opener, and has been in every Johnson movie since his high school neo-noir breakout smash Brick.
