In these dark times, we can all use something fun to distract us from the pre-apocalyptic hellscape slowly catching fire outside our windows, and such an offering has arrived in the form of A Babysitter’s Guide to Monster Hunting, a trailer for which is now available.
The story follows teenager Kelly (Tamara Smart, Artemis Fowl) as she reluctantly agrees to babysit on Halloween. Unfortunately, her young charge Jacob’s belief that monsters are coming for him proves correct, and the young boy is kidnapped by a Boogeyman named the Grand Guignol (Tom Felton, Harry Potter). Kelly is subsequently inducted into the Order of the Babysitters, a worldwide secret society of teenagers who protect young children from the things under the bed that want to steal their special powers, and they set out to rescue Jacob before his mum gets home.
The movie, which after this year’s The Baby-Sitters Club and The Babysitter: Killer Queen could well cause havoc with Netflix’s search algorithms, is adapted from Joe Ballarini’s YA novel of the same name, the first in a trilogy that will likely continue to be brought to life should this prove successful enough. Although the basic setup is a little familiar (there will be few comments about it that don’t reference Labyrinth), the premise promising a story focusing on kids being able to sort out their own problems that adults remain oblivious to will result in something younger viewers can enjoy.
A Babysitter’s Guide to Monster Hunting will most probably be as harmless and light-hearted as the trailer makes it look, and its bright, energetic and extremely mild peril will provide something suitably scary that kids can watch with their parents before more hardcore stuff is brought out once they’ve gone to bed, hopefully safe from the monsters hidden in the darkness.
In 2014, after what we described as “frequent failures,” a previous administration’s FCC attempted to change how the United States’ emergency 911 system works, including making it clear who’s responsible when multiple states inexplicably lose the ability to dial 911 at once.
Some of that accountability might have come in handy this week — because we still don’t know what caused yesterday’s 911 outage. And it’s not clear anything would change even if we knew.
Yesterday, 911 services reportedly disappeared in at least 14 states nationwide, some for as long as an hour and a half. Police departments and public safety agencies across the country had to hand out alternative numbers to call — and in some cases, warn residents not to dial 911...
Many Apple services were hit by outages Tuesday evening, including the App Store, Apple Music, Apple TV Plus, and Apple Arcade, according to Apple’s system status page. For all of the affected services, Apple vaguely says that “some users are affected.” However, as we were writing this article, some of the services were upgraded from being affected by an “issue” to having a full-on “outage.”
Here is the full list of affected services:

Twitter has just expanded its voice tweets feature, which lets you record a snippet of audio to include with a tweet, to more users on iOS. But perhaps more significantly, Twitter is now saying it plans to add transcriptions to voice tweets to improve accessibility, which could help address criticisms from the feature’s June 17th launch.
If you want to get an idea of how voice tweets work right now, just press play on the below tweet to hear a voice clip from my colleague Tom Warren. There’s currently no way to see captions or a transcription of what he’s saying. (Note: Tom is not actually sharing exclusive next-gen console news.)

Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projekt Red has told employees that six-day workweeks will be mandatory ahead of the game’s November 19th release date, even though the studio has repeatedly and explicitly promised it would never do that, Bloomberg reports.
On two separate occasions in 2019, studio co-founder Marcin Iwiński told game journalist Jason Schreier how it would address crunch, once even saying that “we want to be more humane and treat people with respect.” It seemed pretty clear from excerpts like this that mandatory crunch was not going to be part of it!
Jason: If I’m a designer at CD Projekt Red and I say you know what I have kids, I have a family, I’m going to work from 10am to 6pm every day, and that’s it. Even until the...

Adobe is adding a new advanced color grading feature to Lightroom, Lightroom Classic, and Camera Raw, bringing a tool more commonly associated with cinema editing to its pro photography apps.
Lightroom will now have a new color grading panel similar to the Lumetri panel from Adobe’s Premiere Pro video editor, letting you separate out midtones from shadows and highlights with a new three-wheel system. There’s also a global luminance wheel and a blending slider.
Adobe hasn’t said when the new color grading features will be available, but in the video above, Pei Ketron from Adobe’s Lightroom team says there’ll be more information at the company’s virtual Adobe Max conference beginning October 20th.
In case you missed it, Marvel Cinematic Universe star Gwyneth Paltrow has got everyone talking thanks to a photo she recently shared of herself.
It wasn’t just any old photo, of course, as it saw the actress posing in nothing but her birthday suit in honor of her, well, birthday. Paltrow turned 48 over the weekend and to celebrate, she took to Instagram to bare it all and show off how she’s looking now that she’s approaching 50.
Understandably, a lot of people are buzzing about the pic and that includes Gwyneth’s own daughter, Apple Martin. The 16-year-old had a rather hilarious and appropriate reaction to what she saw, simply commenting: MOM. Paltrow’s reply? Three laughing in tears emojis.

While it’s nice to see the actress having some fun with her birthday celebrations, it’d certainly be great if she decided to return to acting full-time. Now that she’s semi-retired, Paltrow doesn’t show up on the big – or small, for that matter – screen too much anymore. In the past couple of years, she’s done a few MCU movies and also had a role in TV series The Politician, but other than that, she’s been staying away from the camera. Instead, she’s focusing on her wellness company Goop, which has seemingly been rather successful for her.
But again, she’s only semi-retired, so perhaps she’ll get the acting bug again at some point down the road and make a full-blown return to cinema. After all, anyone familiar with her work will know that she’s a very talented individual with a whole host of impressive performances under her belt.
For the time being, however, Gwyneth Paltrow seems content with sticking to Goop, and keeping her Instagram followers happy, of course.
