Strong Galaxy Note 10 sales help stem falling Samsung profits
Samsung Electronics has reported third-quarter earnings that show sharp declines year-on-year due to the ongoing slow performance of the global memory chip market, which had been the company’s biggest profit driver. In other areas, however, Samsung is doing pretty well.
Overall, the company made 62 trillion won (~$53 billion) in revenue and 7.78 trillion won (~$6.71 billion) in operating profit, year-on-year drops of 5 and 56 percent respectively. But the mobile business alone posted revenue of 29.25 trillion won (~$25 billion), up 17 percent, with profit rising 32 percent to 2.92 trillion won (~$2.5 billion). Profit is also slightly up at the display panel business.
Samsung says the improved mobile earnings were due to strong sales of...

Game Of Thrones Showrunners Say Toxic Fanbase Put Them Off Star Wars
Much of the Star Wars franchise revolves around the heroic and noble Jedi Knights, who live by a code that preaches peace and serenity while warning against passion and emotional outbursts. Sometimes it feels like the Star Wars fanbase might have missed the memo on this, as many of them appear perpetually incandescent with white-hot fury. The most notable recent example was the pummeling that director Rian Johnson received in the wake of The Last Jedi, which continues in some form nearly two years after the film’s release.
So, perhaps when David Benioff and D.B. Weiss claim that one reason their Star Wars trilogy was cancelled was that they didn’t want to have to deal with what’s being described as a “toxic fandom,” they have a point. After all, they’re already on the receiving end of abuse resulting from the final season of Game of Thrones, which was received less than enthusiastically by fans of the show.
I’m sure it’s a small subset of very loud people doing this, but many folks who’ve become involved with what sounds like a dream job have found that aggressive and obnoxious fans can sour the experience. Daisy Ridley, for instance, has claimed she’ll never return to social media again, saying that the 24/7 abuse she received affected her mental health.
Kelly Marie Tran, meanwhile, also deleted her Instagram following months of racist harassment that began even prior to the release of the movies. And Ahmed Best, who played Jar Jar Binks, claimed he’d contemplated suicide following wall-to-wall rage directed at him after the prequels.
Even George Lucas couldn’t be bothered to deal with angry Star Wars fans anymore, saying in 2012 that:
“Why would I make any more when everybody yells at you all the time and says what a terrible person you are?”
Perhaps people should chill out and maybe don’t make the fun space adventure movies that come out every few years the backbone of your personality. If you consider yourself a real Star Wars fan and you find your blood pressure rising when someone says The Last Jedi was good (it was), then maybe take a cue from Yoda himself: “Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.” And who wants to suffer? Not me!

Terminator: Dark Fate Director Would’ve Quit If Linda Hamilton Didn’t Return
Terminator: Dark Fate is the sixth film in the sci-fi franchise and there’s a lot riding on its success. The first two movies are considered classics of the genre, but the sequels have left much to be desired. While most would agree that there are some redeeming qualities from each of the continuations, on the whole, they’ve failed to live up the legacy of the original duology.
When news first broke that a sixth iteration was gearing up, the responses were muted, at best. After all, to that point, the most recent installment in the series was Terminator Genisys, and while it featured some inspired casting, such as Emilia Clarke taking over the role of Sarah Connor, it’s considered by most to be the least fruitful.
However, interest began building in Dark Fate when it was revealed that James Cameron was coming back to produce the film and that it would be a direct continuation of the first Terminator and its sequel, Terminator: Judgment Day. Fans got even more excited when Deadpool director Tim Miller became attached to the project.
However, Miller’s involvement hinged on one specific aspect: Linda Hamilton returning to the franchise. At the time, Hamilton’s reappearance wasn’t guaranteed, and Miller was upfront recently, saying that he likely would’ve walked had she not come back.
You know, we had a really brief time where we talked about other options before we said, “Well, what if Linda comes back?” Because that’s the optimal thing. And once we started talking about that, we didn’t talk about anything else until Jim had an answer. So, we all just kind of followed. Because if Linda says yes, then that drives a whole bunch of decisions. And if she says no, then you have to do something completely different because there was no world in which anybody else played Linda Hamilton. So, all roads lead to Linda and I don’t know what was beyond them. Probably nothing. I probably would have fucked off and quit if she didn’t do it.
The stars aligned though, and Linda Hamilton agreed to take up arms and save the future alongside the T-800 once again. While many are still skeptical, early reactions have it that this is the first worthy sequel since Judgment Day. With the film opening Friday, November 1st, audiences will get to decide for themselves quite soon, but all signs are point to Terminator: Dark Fate being a proper follow up.
